Fake of the week: The BleckBarry!

It looks like a BlackBerry, it sounds like a BlackBerry, but is it a BlackBerry? No way. It's a BleckBarry. This fancy "smartphone" has some amazing features (if you're living in 1990) that anyone would love to have. this dual-network phone has not one, but two SIM slots, a 2 inch "vibrant color" screen, Bluetooth and 506KB of internal memory. And as if that all wasn't enough, there is a built in FM and TV tuner complete with antenna. This device really does do it all. It looks so much like a BlackBerry -- right down to the cloudy looking OS -- that no one will ever notice the difference. So if you're fed up with owning an actual BlackBerry, you can pop down $70 to have this knock-off by your side.

1284741300 Laptops, Tablet PCs Lenovo LePad to ship in December, IdeaPad U1 Hybrid dock slated for January 2011

Seeing that swiveling Dell Inspiron Duo earlier this week immediately made us think of the other really enticing tablet / laptop we've been waiting for... Lenovo's IdeaPad U1 Hybrid. To recap: it was over eight months ago that the company unveiled it at CES only to tell us a few months later that it was being shelved for the time being.

However, we're hearing now that it's definitely still kicking! According to Lenovo, the 10.1-inch LePad (the tablet part of the U1 Hybrid) will be released in China in December running some version of Android.

The LePad (apologies for repeating the name, we just love saying it in a French accent) will then be greeted in January by its "hybrid option" -- a separate case containing a keyboard and laptop guts.

Lenovo didn't have any updates on the internal specs of the docking / hybrid part, though we're assuming it'll still pack some sort of Intel processor and Windows 7 to transform it into a real life laptop.

Unfortunately for now, Lenovo's saying the LePad and the Hybrid part will only be available in China, but we're gonna keep wishin' and prayin' that both actually see the light of day and journey across the rough seas.

Mimoco bumps out yet another Hello Kitty flash drive to celebrate Sanrio's 50th anniversary

It's no secret that we're very fond of Hello Kitty gadgets -- just like pretty much everyone else on the planet.

And Sanrio's lucrative partnership with Mimoco has spun the famous cat's rep into... more awesome flash drives.

It seems like Sanrio is always celebrating some kind of birthday, and for the company's 50th anniversary they've busted out more than their fair share of gear.

This time, it's a "classic" Hello Kitty flash drive that comes in 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, and 16GB capacities.

We're kind of in love with Kitty's elongated face on this model, so if you so choose, you can grab one of these up for a starting price of $34.95.

PlayStation Move: Is The Move The New Wii?

After four long years of Wii leading the video game console world, Sony finally released its ultimate rival: PlayStation Move. PlayStation Move is very much similar to Wii as it is also a motion-sensing game controller platform.

What sets this PlayStation Move apart from Wii is that while the latter’s sensor bar uses infrared lights, PlayStation Move makes use of PlayStation Eye camera and inertial sensors to track and perceive the control wand’s motions—very impressive.

Once the PlayStation Move’s release date was announced as September 15, 2010, The Move became one of the most anticipated video games consoles ever. It was first launched in Los Angeles in the E3 Expo.

According to tech experts, the release of this game console “changes everything”. Apparently, for the very first time, the player will actually feel like he is the character in the video game. The Move was configured to track and copy the player’s motions at a ratio of 1:1. How amazing is that?

Feedbacks regarding PlayStation Move illustrate a very promising performance in the market of technology and gaming in the next weeks.

With Sony’s PlayStation Move’s latest innovations, I wonder if Nintendo and Microsoft can still produce something that can top this video game console because the Move itself gives “virtual reality” a new meaning.

Nokia C3 Touch and Type (C3-01)

The Nokia C3 Touch and Type is the more businesslike sibling of the X3 Touch and Type, bringing a small touchscreen display to a standard "candy bar" phone. It's a conventional looking handset with classic Nokia design details, and a much more normal keypad layout than the X3, and that will certainly appeal to many existing Nokia customers.

Nokia have caused some confusion again with their names - the C3 Touch and Type is actually the Nokia C3-01.. the original Nokia C3 (or Nokia C3-00) is a cheap QWERTY messaging phone. The two handsets are very different and will probably be sold alongside each other, which might be confusing.

This is a Series 40 device, rather than being a Symbian smartphone. There's nothing seriously wrong with Series 40 for most users, but it does seem like a wasted effort when Nokia's long term intentions are to push Symbian into all but the simplest phones.

The 2.4" touchscreen is a basic resistive panel with 240 x 320 pixels resolution, and it is basically used for choosing menu options and similar functions. Nokia expect text input be done with the numeric keypad, which seems sensible.

In specification terms, this is pretty close to the Nokia C5 and Nokia 6700 handsets. It's a 3.5G device with maximum download speeds of 10Mbps on HSPA, and it has support for WiFi, including Wireless "N" networks.

On the back is a 5 megapixel camera with flash and VGA video capture at 15 frames per second. Inside is a microSD slot and a 1050 mAh battery that can provide up to 4 hours talktime on 3G and 18 days standby time.

Software includes some social networking applications, a web browser and music player. The C3 Touch and Type also has a 3.5mm audio socket and an FM radio, so it is quite capable in this respect.

One key thing that the C3 Touch and Type lacks is GPS, but this is actually quite a low-end phone which is priced at around €145 before tax and subsidy, so it is hardly a surprise.

Nokia may have hit on the "next big thing" with these Touch and Type phones.. or they may just be a soon-to-be-forgotten oddity. Really nobody has done this before, and Nokia are in uncharted waters.

The Nokia C3 Touch and Type should be available during Q4 2010 in Silver, Warm Grey and Golden Khaki colours.

MSI introduces GX660 and GX660R performance notebooks

MSI has a couple of performance notebooks for the mass market - we're talking about the GX660 and G660R models that will look pretty similar on the outside, boasting a black case with orange highlights, while the 15.6-inch display is shared by both as well. Apart from that, other specifications include Dynaudio speakers and Mobility Radeon HD 5870 discrete graphics for portable gaming sessions.

What separates the two, then? Well, the GX600 will be powered by a 2.4GHz Core i5 processor and 4GB RAM, while the GX600R is superior thanks to a 1.73GHz Core i7 quad-core processor, 6GB RAM, a 1080p display and a Blu-ray drive. The MSI GX660 and GX660R will retail for $1,450 and $1,750, respectively. Any takers? Hopefully the battery life will be able to hold out.

New Panasonic Toughbook Models Arrive in India

Panasonic has updated the line-up of its 'ToughBook' range of laptops by launching five new models. All five laptops are powered by Intel Core i5 vPro processor and include: CF-S9, CF-F9, CF-C1, CF-19 and CF-31.

Panasonic's Toughbook range is known for its ruggedness and "go anywhere" nature. These laptops can go to places and do stuff no other "normal" laptops could handle. For example, you can drop a Toughbook from a height of 76cms and it would survive the fall (even while it's on!). Interestingly, the height is reduced to 30cms when the laptop is off -probably because the security mechanisms would be active when it's powered off.

They also come with waterproof keyboards and some versions can survive 0.2 liter of water spillage. If all these weren't enough, these models can also resist pressure load of 100 kg and localised pressure load of 30 kg.

The CF-19 and CF-31 models from the range run on Windows 7 Professional and comes with a three-year limited warranty on parts and labour.

Here are the prices of the new models:

* CF-19- Rs. 2,12,000
* CF-31- Rs. 2,54,000
* CF-U1-Rs. 1,58,000
* CF-S9- Rs. 1,49,000
* CF-F9- Rs. 1,57,000
* CF-C1- Rs. 1,52,000

As you might have seen, these are, by no means, cheap devices. But then, if you work in a hazardous area or somewhere you wouldn't like to take you Macbook along, this one seems to be the perfect choice!

Demo: Veebeam wirelessly connects your TV, laptop

I've seen several devices that let you stream content wirelessly from a computer straight to a television. But they often come with compromises: they cost too much, degrade the quality of the picture or restrict the types of programming you can watch. On October 1, startup Veebeam will begin shipping a small and seemingly simple device to address such shortcomings. Veebeam plugs into a TV via HDMI or other connection. You then insert a USB antenna into a laptop or other nearby PC.

From then on using Wireless USB or WUSB technology, you can show off exactly what's on the laptop screen on the TV. That includes fare from YouTube, Hulu, Netflix, and iTunes, as well as pictures or whatever else might might be on the computer. What's more, you can output video up to the 1080p HD standard.

You will need a Windows or Mac computer with a fairly robust processor; Veebeam doesn't make nice with netbooks. And you'll have to keep the computer nearby since you control what's on the screen with the laptop's own keyboard, mouse or trackpad (unless you have a remote that works with your computer).

An HD box costs $139. Veebeam also sells a standard definition version for $99.

BlackBerry Battery Tips: How to Extend the Battery Life of Your BlackBerry Torch 9800

I've penned quite a few tutorials on how to extend and maximize your BlackBerry smartphone's battery life, (check out the two most recent ones here and here) but this week I found a new post on BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion's (RIM) technical solution center that focuses on the brand new BlackBerry Torch 9800.

I've touched on some of the tips before in my BlackBerry battery-life stories, but a couple of them are unique to the new BlackBerry Torch and RIM's latest OS, BlackBerry 6, and are therefore worth a mention here.

RIM's Torch 9800 battery tips are as follows:

* Close your browser when not in use; ensure all browser tabs are closed (close with the Escape key, not the red End key)
* Exit your media player when not in use (or set the default timeout to a shorter interval within media > options)
* Press the lock button (top left) before putting the device in a pocket (to avoid unnecessary display battery consumption)
* Exit/close applications when not in use (especially any applications that utilize the GPS functionality). Monitor/be aware of the frequency of Podcast and Social Feeds updates (you may want to disable automatic refreshing).

The first point is BlackBerry 6 specific, and it should apply to all RIM smartphone's running the new OS, since the BlackBerry Webkit browser in BlackBerry 6 is the first RIM browser to offer tabbed-browsing functionality.

In reference to the second point, you can adjust your BlackBerry's default media-player timeout by opening up your media application/folder, tapping the BlackBerry Menu key and choosing Options. Then, choose a new timeout value (5, 10, 20 minutes, etc.) and save your changes.

The third tip aims to reduce accidental activation of your BlackBerry Torch's screen while in a pocket or handbag, which can drain battery. Another way to ensure that you BlackBerry Torch, or any other BlackBerry, isn't consuming battery life when in your pocket is to set an automatic password lock. Your device will then lock on its own after a certain time period even if you forget to lock it. (Learn how to activate your BlackBerry password lock and otherwise improve your BlackBerry security, by reading "BlackBerry Security Basics: Five Tips to Keep Your Smartphone Safe.")

Finally, adjust the update frequency in RIM's Podcast and Social Feeds apps—Social Feeds is only available in BlackBerry 6—to conserve battery life. To modify Social Feeds update settings, open up the application, then hit your BlackBerry Menu key to locate the app Options. Next, open the RSS Options menu and change the Automatically Refresh Your RSS Feeds option to a higher value. The more time between refreshes, the less battery life the application needs.
