9800 Blackberry Torch And Canada’s Release Date Delay

The Blackberry Torch 9800 release date in Canada has been pushed back from September 24 to September 30 or October 1,depending on your carrier. The Torch 9800 is Blackberry’s attempt to appeal to a more tech savvy consumer base, who has been lured by snazzy Android and iPhone handsets.

The Torch 9800 has a slideout keyboard and full touch screen experience. IT’s like a touch screen phone with training wheels that allows the user to keep the physical QWERTY keyboard they love, while having the larger screen touchscreen experience.

Many venture to say that the phone feels heavy, but I think it feels sturdy. I checked it out at my local AT&T store, and it seemed to be the high quality phone we have come to know and love from Blackberry/RIM.

The company reports seeing a slight uptick in subscribers since launch. To combat the iPhone and the Android phones, RIM is going to introduce an update to the Storm and unveil a tablet computer soon. A tablet computer from RIM would be a suitable iPad competitor, as it would appeal to businesses that already have integration with Blackberry’s technology.

Many are looking forward to the Blackberry Torch 9800 release date in Canada, and are disappointed that their phone won’t be in tomorrow. However, it’s only another week and it will be here before you know it.

If you live in the greater Toronto area of Canada, you may see some Rogers store beginning to put out dummy phones of the BlackBerry Torch 9800. It is unclear whether or not Rogers will also post-pone the launch date of the Torch.

Rogers is pegged to launch the Torch on September 24th for $199.99 with a 3-yr contract. If the launch gets pushed back it could be as late as October 1st. Nevertheless, it appears as though Rogers is on point. Any Canadians looking to pick up the Torch if you haven't already?

Scosche freedomMIC for Flip Video cameras is the wireless microphone add-on for Real Americans

Freedom. Justice. Microphones. We're pretty sure you can find all of those in the constitution, or inside the pure essence of eagle tears, or in Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run" played backwards. Scosche understands, and that's why they're unveiling the freedomMIC add-on for Flip Video cameras. It's one of those new FlipPort-compatible accessories that we're sure we'll be seeing plenty of now that Cisco's new wave of cameras are out for public consumption. The mic itself offers a pretty neat solution to the perennial problem of sucky Flip audio: you plug the receiver base into the bottom of the Flip and hand the wireless lapel mic to your subject. Conveniently, you can start and stop recording with the microphone itself, and a 4 hour rechargeable battery should get you through the most trying of interviews or impassioned YouTube monologues. The mic will be out in "late December" for $100.

Verizon Pimping Under 100 Corporate Stores for Midnight R2D2 Droid 2 Landing

If you thought Verizon wasn’t going to do anything special for their launch of the R2D2 special edition of the Motorola Droid 2, then guess again. One store in Hialeah, Florida has already detailed their midnight launch event for this device where they’ll be having a Star Wars costume party in the parking lot starting a half hour after the store’s normal closing time (9:00PM). The festivities will go on until midnight when Verizon swings open their glass doors to let the horde in on some good R2D2 loving.

The series of events may be different from store to store, but for the Hialeah location they’ll be giving out an R2Droid2 to whoever shows up with the best costume and will also be raffling one off so anyone who is too embarrassed to show their cosplay love will have a chance. For those who don’t win, you’ll be able to snap up at most two of these phones, but no more as this will be a limited launch with Verizon only offering 50,000 in stores and online.

It’s said that each Verizon store will be getting 150 devices, though they didn’t say whether or not they would be exclusive to the midnight locations (though a quick trip to the calculator shows me that they’d only have about 15,000 devices to sell if that were the case so I’m sure you’ll be able to find these at any Verizon store.)

The Miami Herald has other details regarding activations and such for those who don’t want to take the device out of the box (for collectors and eBayers) so head on over there now to read their full report and be sure to call up your local Verizon locations to see which closest to you will be offering it midnight September 30th.

Concept smartphone could kill off laptops

Firefox creator Mozilla has published concepts for a futuristic mobile phone that beams keyboards onto hard surfaces and could be an effective replacement for laptop computers.

Firstly, it is only a concept but is in keeping with other concepts I have seen lately, including a pen-like device from Intel that beams a high-definition display onto a wall and projects a keyboard onto a surface. Don't be too surprised if discussions are taking place with vendors like Starbucks or airliners to provide the right surfaces and lighting conditions for these future computers/smartphones.

Mozilla's Seabird 'Open Web Concept Phone' has been created by designer Billy May.

The concept device has dual pico projectors, an 8-megapixel camera, would be capable of wireless charging and would have a detachable Bluetooth haptic clicker device for doing presentations.

Mozilla Labs launched the Concept Series in 2009 with an open call for participation and has had thousands of people join in, share ideas and develop concepts around Firefox, the Mozilla projects and the open web as a whole.

"The Mozilla Seabird, part of the Mozilla Labs' Concept Series, is an experiment in how users might interact with their mobile content as devices and technology advances," May wrote.

"Drawing on insights culled from the Mozilla community through the project's blog, a focus quickly developed around frustrating physical interactions. While mobile CPUs, connectivity and development platforms begin approaching that of desktops, the lagging ability to efficiently input information has grown ever more pronounced.

"The Seabird, then, introduces a few possibilities into how user interaction might evolve with the advancing motion capture and projector-driven innovation in the market. First out, the Seabird imagines how a multiple use dongle might augment the crowded gestural interface with greater precision and direct manipulation of content in 3D space.

"With mobile phone companies such as Samsung, LG and Motorola moving towards display applications for projectors, the technology remains open for expanding user interaction and input at the same time.

The Seabird, on just a flat surface, enables netbook-quality interaction by working with the projector's angular distortion to deliver interface, rather than content. With the benefit of a dock, each projector works independently and delivers laptop levels of efficiency," May said.

Mozilla shows off futuristic smartphone concept – Seabird

The smartphone future is here, this is what we can expect in the coming years from the smartphone manufacturers. Mozilla labs yesterday showcased a futuristic mobile phone concept, which supposedly runs on Android.

Named as Mozilla Seabird, this concept shows how users’ interaction will change over time with their mobile devices, how touchpads will be replaced by projected full keyboards and other stuff. Well, there is still a lot more innovation needed to develop Seabird in reality. We hope that we can see it transform to reality in the next five years.

Droid 2 Global edition leaked, features a 1.2 Ghz processor?

A few days ago, we told you that Verizon will be discontinuing the current model of Droid 2, and will launch a world edition of Droid 2 instead of it. First it was just a rumor, but now it fells like a true story, because the image above is the first image of the Motorola Droid 2 World edition, which is actually a dual GSM/CDMA version of Droid 2.

The model you can see in the image above is white, and Droid-Life is saying that there will be other colors too, like blue and black. There is no difference between the Droid 2 and Droid 2 Global, only the radio frequencies, but may be the processor too.

The current Droid 2 comes with a 1 GHz processor, but according to screenshot below, may be the D2 World edition features a 1.2 Ghz processor. Well that would be good news if you are currently looking forward to Droid 2 World Edition. A full 200 MHz higher than the current model, is that the only new upgrade, or there is something else too? We’ll figure it out soon.
