Nokia N8 Gets A Release Date

The Nokia N8 has finally got an official release date from Nokia after much speculation online.

The Nokia N8 will be released across networks from the 1st October , although it will be available direct from Nokia in the last couple of days in September. Infact, you can pre-order the mobile from Nokia direct right now with it costs £429.00 Sim-free.

We'd expect a marketing barrage over the next few weeks , as the N8 is the most important smartphone Nokia has launched in a long time.

It not only marks the introduction of the Symbian^3 operating system , but is also the first real feature phone launched by Nokia since the N900. They are no doubt aiming to take on the iPhone, Samsung Galaxy S and other top smartphones and it will take a great mobile and a big advertising spend to succeed.

We're not sure how many networks will carry the Nokia N8, but its been confirmed that Vodafone will be launching the mobile and will get it in an exclusive Lime green colour. We also know that both O2 and T-Mobile will be carrying the Nokia N8.

Olive FrvrOn with AAA Battery Arrives on Airtel

Remember the FrvrOn from Olive? The handset managed to ruffle quite a few feathers at the time of its launch back in March when it was revealed that it was a hybrid phone that can also accommodate an AAA battery inside it - apart from a normal, rechargeable one.

The phone is now being made available on Airtel and will come with a free connection. The handset will be available at a price of Rs. 1,299. Olive is also trying its best to promote the FrvrOn in the rural areas of India and according to a statement, has stationed 19 vans across various locations in the country to promote the handset.

Nokia N8 launches September 30, says senior manager

Tapani Kaskinen is Nokia's Senior Comms Manager, so it's fitting that he'd be the first person from the company to communicate a solid release date for its long-awaited N8 handset. The gent in question told Finnish newspaper Kauppalehti that advance orders of the N8 will "begin shipping 30 September." Bear in mind we're chewing through a machine translation here, but that part's pretty unmistakable. It also meshes perfectly with earlier speculation surrounding Nokia purchasing Google AdWords -- that indicated a one-week exclusive starting on September 23rd for Nokia's UK online store, which, if you do the math, again points to a wide release at the end of the month. We asked Nokia about it ourselves and they're remaining mum on the matter, but chances are looking pretty good that October will start with the N8 finally in eager users' hands.

Huawei plans first Android phone for Australia

Chinese manufacturer Huawei late yesterday said it was talking to carriers in Australia and New Zealand about local distribution of its new IDEOS mobile phone, which runs the latest version of Google’s Android operating system.

The IDEOS comes in several models and runs Android 2.2, also known as Froyo. The handset features a 2.8″ QVGA, 320×240 capacitive touchscreen, a 3.2 megapixel camera with dual LED flash and will support 3G speeds of up to 7.2Mbps as well as 802.11n Wi-Fi. It also comes with GPS functionality for Google Maps navigation and supports SD cards of up to 16GB for additional storage.

“Huawei is currently in talks with Australian and New Zealand operators about local distribution,” the company said in a statement issued overnight.

The IDEOS will sell for between US$100 and US$200, although Huawei has not yet said what the phone will cost in Australia, nor what mobile telcos it is talking to regarding distribution.

On paper the IDEOS initially looked as though it might not support Telstra’s 850Mhz Next G network, as the device was listed as supporting the 900 and 2100MHz device bands, but a Huawei spokesperson later clarified there was a 850MHz version of the device.

Huawei also announced three additional Android-powered devices — its U8800, U8500 and U8300 models — however, it has not revealed plans to bring the handsets to the Australian market.

The news represents the first launch by Huawei of an Android handset in the Australian market, as well as a significant mobile phone push in general by the company, which has a strong handset presence in its home turf in China.

Up until this point Huawei has not focused on bringing its consumer line-up to Australia, preferring to work on larger deals for carrier network infrastructure behind the scenes.

It also comes as virtually every other handset manufacturer of note, apart from companies like Apple and Nokia which run their own operating systems on their phones, have recently started introducing waves of Android-based smartphones into the Australian market.

Even companies who have not traditionally focused on smartphones are getting into the game. Dell has been discussing its Streak mini-tablet with carriers, and Acer on Wednesday revealed plans to bring no less than five Android handsets to the local market.

Huawei debuts Android 2.2 IDEOS smartphone

Huawei has launched the IDEOS, or U8150, smartphone, which will cost between $100 and $200, depending on the market, the company said Thursday at the Internationale Funkaustellung (IFA) trade show in Berlin.

The price is what operators pay Huawei for the device, and it will be up to them to decide what they charge their subscribers, the company said.

Huawei is convinced that more affordable smartphones will help expand the market, and the IDEOS smartphone will also change what a product in this category should come with. It has a 2.8-inch touchscreen, a 3.2-megapixel camera and GPS.

Users will also be able to access the Internet using 802.11n, which is quickly becoming a more common network feature on high-end smartphones. The Qualcomm processor is clocked at 528 MHz, according to Huawei.

Android version 2.2 will allow users to turn the phone into a wireless hotspot. Users will connect to the smartphone with Wi-Fi and the device will then connect them to the Internet using the HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) 3G wireless at up to 7.2Mbit/sec.

The phone will start shipping in the next couple of weeks, and will become available in "a number of countries across Europe, Asia-Pacific, North America and Latin America", according to Huawei.

The company is also getting ready to ship the U8800, which is a more advanced smartphone model. The phone was first announced at Mobile World Congress in February, and it too comes with Android version 2.2. However, its standout feature is HSDPA at 14.4M bps. The phone will start shipping in October, and will become available in both Western Europe, North America and the Asia-Pacific region.

Going forward, the IDEOS name will be used on several other smartphones, as well, and a tablet isn't out of the question, Huawei said.

Acer Stream review

The Acer Stream is the company's latest flagship handset, following on from the Liquid and Liquid E before it. Acer isn't a company with a great history in mobile devices and so far has enjoyed limited success. It's clear that Acer is committed to this agenda, but has it hit the right notes with the Stream?

On paper the Stream looks impressive. A 3.7-inch 800 x 480 capacitive AMOLED display puts it in HTC Desire territory. The 5-megapixel autofocus camera, offering 720p video capture squares up against the Samsung Galaxy S. The micro HDMI out puts it in the game with the HTC Evo. But does it compete with these hero handsets?

We've seen how the Android battleground is drawn up. With most phones offering similar, if not the same, hardware components and the same core operating system, the difference between a good phone and a bad phone often comes down to two things - the design and what the company does to it, which govern the user experience.

Okay, it isn't quite that simple. The screen makes a big difference when the touch response isn't right, but often that is not the fault of the hardware - especially when it comes to a capacitive touchscreen AMOLED display, but how the manufacturer presents the operating system beneath it.

Starting with the design, Acer doesn't do itself any favours. There is a hint of the beTouch range around the back, with a matte black cover shaped as though it has come off the same design line. It's a simple clip on affair and whilst this doesn't make it a bad phone, it doesn't have the impact in the hand that the glorious unibody design of the HTC Desire has, or the premium materials of the iPhone 4.

Around the front there is just a little too much bordering on that display. It feels like the prize asset is hidden away, with the design bringing in a screen frame, that again sits in the body of the phone. It feels a little chunky, lacking consumer refinement and wow factor in the hand. It doesn’t exhibit the clean and sophisticated lines you want from your daily handset.

Windows Phone-powered LG E900 spotted with Vodafone 360

Remember how the mobile tech world threw their arms up in frustration at the possibility that upcoming Windows Phone 7 mobile OS from Microsoft would not support copy/paste or HTML email? Right, well it turns out that Microsoft is not as short-sighted as some had believed. A new video has popped up online, showing the WP7 platform getting down with some good, old-fashioned HTML email. That’s right, folks, Windows Phone 7 will have fully functioning HTML email support.

The misconception that WinPho would not have be able to display HTML code in emails was initially brought to light by PocketNow. Today, we’re happy to tell you, dear reader, that the new generation of smartphones running Microsoft’s completely revamped mobile operating system will indeed play nice with any and all email that you throw at it. Since speculating that Microsoft may have left out a critical feature in their WP7 email client, the blog has clarified that their test build of Windows Phone 7 did not offer an option to download images in email, which made it seem like HTML email was a no-go for WP7.

The demo video you see here shows a prototype WinPho device running a newer build of Windows Phone 7. Notice that images are not automatically downloaded and displayed in emails – likely to thwart spammers, who often track image downloads to verify that a particular email address is valid and still alive. We like having the option to fight spammers, but that’s not what’s important. What’s important is that, once a WP7 user hits the link to download images, HTML emails will be displayed in all their media-heavy glory. You should also take note of the multi-touch pinch-zooming capabilities of the email client.

Windows Phone 7 seems to be getting better and better as time goes on. Especially since we last saw Microsoft’s public demonstrations of WP7.

Nokia’s Featurephone Problem

Nokia’s Featurephone ProblemNokia’s struggles in smartphones are well documented, and I’m not going to rehash them here. However, if you live in the U.S. it is easy to overlook just how huge and successful Nokia is. Even in smartphones, Nokia is the global volume leader, and when it comes to featurephones, Nokia literally sells about six dozen of them in the time it takes to read this sentence – every minute of every day.

Most of those are basic voice phones sold in emerging markets like India and Africa, but Nokia is also the market leader in multimedia featurephones. Nokia’s latest entry in that category is the X3 Touch and Type (not to be confused with the X3, launched last year), which is a Series 40 phone with a touchscreen on top and a physical numeric keypad below. I find the X3 Touch and Type deeply disturbing.

First, a bit of background: Whenever I’ve gone to Nokia’s headquarters in Espoo, Finland (which looks like what would happen if you crossed an IKEA with an Apple store), I’ve been impressed by how humble, competitive, and damned smart the people are. Finland has some of the highest labor rates in the world, yet Nokia somehow manages to effectively compete with Chinese vendors on cost. Nokia is not just the largest handset vendor in the world, in most of the world the company retains a premium brand image – and in some areas Nokia has staggeringly high market share.

Nokia got this way by riding the GSM wave in Europe with durable, stylish phones that had wonderfully simple user interfaces. Nokia then built a supply chain and manufacturing capabilities second to none, and it pushed hard into emerging markets such as India, China, and Africa, where it maintains distribution advantages that rivals still have a tough time matching. Ever-conscious of creating economies of scale, Nokia split its line into three basic platforms: S30 for basic voice, S40 for mid-tier feature phones, and S60 for smartphones. However, with the strategy set, Nokia seemingly put its designers on auto-pilot.

Over the past ten years, Nokia has stood by while an entire generation of new form factors has passed it by; Nokia missed the clamshell, the thin trend, QWERTY messaging phones, and touchscreens. In each instance, Nokia half-heartedly introduced its own take on these designs a few years late, just in time to miss what’s next. The touchscreen feature phone has been around so long that, after dozens of iterations, LG actually has a uniform touchscreen UI, and Samsung decided to turn its RTOS (Real Time OS) into a smartphone platform. In contrast, the interface on the new X3 is just touch-enabled S40 without the benefit of a virtual or physical QWERTY keyboard. Nokia calls this “Touch & Type,” but that is misleading, as no typing is involved.

Nokia E5-00 (Hardware) Review

The Nokia E5-00 is a mid-priced messenger aimed at the business user in your household. It comes with a 2.4-inch non-touch screen, QWERTY keyboard and instant access to all your email and business files. What’s more, it also packs in a host of social media apps so you’ll be able to use the Nokia E5-00 for pleasure as well as business. Read on to find out how well it handles with our Nokia E5-00 review.

The Nokia E5-00 shares many of the same features as the Nokia E72, which became available at the end of 2009. So, you’ll find the same screen size, same use of a cracking QWERTY keyboard with individual keys and rubber coating, and even the same 5-Megapixel CCD camera setup. However, there are subtle differences that make the Nokia E5-00 a device in its own right.

Check out our Nokia E5-00 unboxing review

The Nokia E5-00 has a great design and feel to it. The use of a full metal body means it’s as safe-as-house should you drop it or treat it a little rough. The metal backplate similarly is secure and is held in place by pegs either side of the body, the same as we previously saw in the Nokia C3-00.

Measuring just 12.8mm at its thickest point this is a super-slim messenger device and with an overall weight of 126g, it’s a shade lighter than the Nokia E72. On the top of the Nokia E5-00 you’ll find the power socket and also a 3.5mm audio jack. There is also a micro USB port located under a secure latch, so you’ll be able to sync the device with your laptop. The only other features on the side of the device are the aforementioned baseplate pegs and the standard volume buttons (right-hand side) that also double as Zoom controls for the camera.

With this little amount of decoration, everything is focussed on the main body of the Nokia E5-00. The navigation buttons have been reworked compared to the Nokia E72 and feel more spacious and easier to use. The main phone function buttons are made of a single piece of metal with sensors underneath, so sit flush with the main body, while the Home and Message buttons are individual keys that stand proud of the main body. We found using the Nokia E5-00 easy and with a good sized D-pad navigating the onscreen menu is simple.

The Nokia E5-00 QWERTY keyboard has seen something of a slight overhaul, with a large Spacebar and tweaking of some of the secondary keys. However, you’ll find the same rubber-coating that was used on the Nokia E72, so keys feel tactile and being individually mounted you’ll find them nice and responsive. Firing out messages and longer emails is really easy with the Nokia E5-00 and we’ve found it a pleasure to use.

The 5-Megapixel camera comes with a 4x Zoom and with a single LED Flash is fine for use in most everyday situations. However, the lack of a second LED will mean that low-light conditions may well suffer. We’ll be checking out the Nokia E5-00 camera in a separate review but for now, it uses the same Symbian S60 3rd Edition software as other such devices.

You’ll find Wi-Fi and the A-GPS are incredibly easy to setup and start using and with the pre-installed Ovi Maps, you’ll be able to take full advantage of free sat-navigation for life.

The Nokia E5-00 is a great device to use. It feels reassuringly tough in the hand and the keyboard is a pleasure to use. If you already own a Nokia E72 it seems unlikely you’ll want to swift but for anyone looking for a great all-round QWERTY messenger, the Nokia E5-00 could well be the device for you.

Nokia 5250 makes its official sighting, touchscreen smartphone at price 115 euros

After many sightings and leaks Nokia has finally announced the launch of its latest touchscreen smartphone, the new Nokia 5250. The Finnish mobile company introduces Nokia 5250 as a trendy handset featuring music player and a free copy of Guitar Hero 5 Mobile for its music fans and loads of other features with retail price tag of 115 euros. The handset is expected to hit the market by the Q4.

Nokia 5250 sports a 2.8 inch TFT touchscreen with an aspect ratio of 16:9 and a resolution of 640 x 360 pixels. The phone comes with an onboard memory of 51MB expandable up to 16 GB via microSD card. Its 2 MP camera provides an access to Ovi Store so that the users can directly share their photos on social networks and upload them on the web.

Since Nokia 5250 is largely seen as a music phone, the handset provides large number of options for music lovers. It includes an integrated FM radio, an access to Ovi Music that offers downloadable tracks and Ovi Music Unlimited from select stores. Ovi Store can also be accessed for additional applications and games. The battery ofNokia 5250 offers 7 hours of talk time, 18 days of standby time and 24 hours of non-stop music.

The handset also offers a fast access to social networks like Facebook, Twitter and MySpace from the homescreen. The user can log in to any email accounts like Gmail, Yahoo! Mail IM and Ovi Mail. The handset runs on Symbian 1 OS and the connectivity options include GPRS for data connectivity and GSM/EDGE over four bands. Sadly the phone does not offer Wi-Fi connect and GPRS or 3G.Nokia 5250 comes in 4 vibrant colors namely, Black, White, Purple and Blue.

The price of Nokia 5250 in India is Rs. 7,500. The smartphone from Nokia is no way comparable to the high end smartphones in the market but undeniably Nokia 5250 at such a price tag is company’s effort to launch a smartphone that comes within the range of its mid range mobile customers.

Dell Aero goes to At&t: Any takers?

 Dell Aero

If you are knee deep in the cell phone world as some of our readers and obviously our writers it is hard to imagine mobile’s being pumped out that don’t have all the bells and whistles that last few years have brought to the industry. Thinking about a mobile without HD recording capabilities or the latest OS or even a super powerful processor makes us cringe and leaves a one-sided question. Who buy’s this stuff.

Well my friends the day has yet to come where every phone is a super phone. If and when that day comes, we’ll let you know. But in the meantime we get to ponder the likes of such phones as the Dell Aero. The Dell Aero has officially made its way to the likes of At&t and is seemingly disappointing. For about $99 buck and the cost of a new contract you can pick up a Dell Aero, if you chose to run sans a contract you can pick one up for $299.

The Dell Aero tries to hold its own with a 3.5 multi-touch display, a flash equipped 5MP camera, a 624 MHz processor, quad band GSM, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, a micro-SD memory slot – which is expandable to 32GB – and a 1000 mAh battery. Last but not least, the new Dell Areo runs Android 1.5, yes Android 1.5. I will not delve into the fact that Dell and At&t are launching a phone from 2010 that is using an OS that is very much outdated, I will simply leave that alone.

But all in all the Dell Aero seems like a good package for the price. It seems like it would make a good gift to someone you know that does not need the high end processing that the most of us are used to.

I’m trying not to pass judgment on the device, but business is business. So tell us your thoughts on the new Dell Aero via At&t. Look appealing to you or anyone you know?
