Sony Ericsson Xperia X12 snaps leak online

Images of the latest Sony Ericsson Xperia model, the X12, have leaked online, with Russian bloggers giving it the once over and revealing what it's wearing under the hood.

Codenamed Anzu, it features a 4.3 inch LCD display running at an 854 x 480 resolution with a 800MHz Qualcomm MSM7230 chip powering the show, the same as can be found in the HTC Desire Z.

As for the OS, it's currently stuck on Android 2.1, with 2.2 due for inclusion before its retail release. Sorry for those hoping for a Gingerbread smartphone, but you're going to have to wait until some time in 2011 until the X12 makes that particular jump.

No news on pricing or release yet, or even an official name yet, but we'll keep you posted on whatever comes of the Anzu. For now, enjoy a few more snaps of the phone below.

Sony Ericsson Anzu Previewed

Eldar Murtazin of Mobile-Review is at it again. The serial phone leaker had just days ago announced that Sony Ericsson is planning to come up with a new high end Android device codenamed the Anzu. That handset, which the company might christen the Xperia X12 has now been previewed by the man himself and he doesn’t seem to be very impressed. Eldar, has a history of reviewing soon to be launched handsets which somehow manage to end up with him much before most others would have even heard of it.

This time around, its the turn of the Anzu which is likely to become the flasgship Sony Ericsson handset when launched. The Anzu boasts of a 4.3 inch, 854*480 pixel LCD display, an 800 Mhz Qualcomm MSM7230 processor (which as you now know, is also used on the T-Mobile
G2). This handset was earlier thought to be running the latest version of Android – the Gingerbread. This prototype however runs Android 2.1 much to our disappointment.

The Anzu also adds a no longer exciting 12 megapixel camera to the spec sheet. This particular sample however could only snap pictures at 3 megapixels . It would also be able to do 720p video recording which has of late become the de facto standard for video recording on any self respecting smartphone. The problem with the Anzu is that by the time it arrives, there could be contenders that could be doing full HD recording and playback.

Eldar also claims that the Anzu’s build quality is a step down from that of existing Xperia handsets – but then this was just a prototype so there is chance that many of the things you are seeing here would have been changed when the final version arrives in the next few months.

Sony Ericsson Anzu aka Xperia X12 Previewed, Release Date Is Early 2011

Eldar Murtazin is a very popular figure in the gadget world as he always manages to get his hands on devices that others dream of touching. The last phone to fall into his hands is the rumored Sony Ericsson Anzu, a device that should become SE’s flagship device in 2011.

The Sony Ericsson Anzu is powered by a 800MHz processor from Qualcomm, the same CPU found in the T-Mobile G2 aka HTC Desire Z, and Android 2.1 OS. Murtazin says that the SE Anzu will run on Android 2.2 Froyo at launch, while users will be able to download Android 2.3 Gingerbread soon after.

If the CPU will be clocked at this speed, then the Sony Ericsson Anzu should run stock Android UI in order to prevent any lag. Still, I can’t understand why would someone put a 800MHz CPU when the competition will bring smartphones with dual-core 1.2GHz processors to the market.

Sony Ericsson might be crazy, but the Anzu will feature a 4.3-inch touchscreen with a 854 x 480 resolution, HDMI output, and a 12-megapixel camera on the back capable of shooting 720p HD video. Again, others will bring 8MP cameras capable of recording 1080p videos. In 2011 filming 720p videos will be so… 2010.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X12 enjoys public outing

Those of you hoping the phone that Sony Ericsson codenamed Anzu, but should be released as the Xperia X12, would be packing Gingerbread out of the box are in for a disappointment as a Russian insider has got his hands on the device and dismissed the rumours.

The early-model device pictured is said to be running Android 2.1, with 2.2 expected to be loaded up come launch day, and 2.3 not coming until later on in 2011.

But despite the lack of next-gen Android action, this device does look like a sexy bit of kit, and is packing some decent hardware on board too.

It has a 4.3-inch LCD display with a 854 x 480 resolution and it runs via the same chip that you'll find inside a HTC Desire Z, the 800MHz Qualcomm MSM7230 .

Its camera is 12 megapixels and it is capable of shooting 720p HD videos as well.

There's no release details for the codenamed Anzu as of yet, but as always we'll keep you posted.

Sony Ericsson Phones Affected by Component Shortage

Though, Sony Ericsson has declared net profits in its third quarters, low sale of phones has disappointed the company.

CEO of the company said the sale of its mobile phone in September was hit due to scarcity of some key components.

Prior to this, Sony Ericsson has reported Q3 profit a bit low than what as expected as it was unable to ship lesser phones than demanded. However, Bert Nordberg, CEO Sony Ericsson said its smartphones are doing pretty well in the market.

He said, “There are supply chain shortages on the market, and that has affected us. Our volume did not meet expectations. That is the one reason sticking out.”

Sony Ericsson, offering Windows 7 based cellphones is planning to go for Windows Phone 7 software.

Nordberg declined to make any further comments, but said he is going to evaluate it. Further, he said that he wished to raise the profit by 10 percent, but was not sure when would he be able to accomplish the task.

Sony Ericsson's LiveView Android device plays nice

We're still trying to decide if a postage stamp-sized secondary display for your Android smartphone that you can wear as a wristwatch is a piece of genius or just a misguided widget that became a real gadget when it got kissed by a fairy in a dream.

It's looking like we'll get to find out soon, as Sony Ericsson's little LiveView remote/watch has just hurdled over the FCC's measuring device and, according to Le Journal du Geek, will be shipping in November with a price of 59 euros. That's right around $80, which could either be an awful lot or only slightly dear depending on how useful it turns out to be.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 starts shipping its outdated self around the world

We're not going to make any apologies. So long as Sony Ericsson continues to pretend like Android 2.x doesn't exist and keeps kicking out new devices running Android 1.6, we'll keep docking it points like the meanest of Russian judges. The 3-inch X8 is set to be Sony Ericsson's most affordable Android handset -- we were told it'll cost south of $300 unlocked -- to date, but then you get your money's worth with a 600MHz processing core and a 3.2 megapixel fixed focus camera. Oh, even better news is that the X8 will get updated to Android 2.1 "a little later" than SE's X10 line. If you want to avoid all this Android upgrade drama (and save a few more pennies), Sony Ericsson is also starting to ship out its no-frills Cedar candybar as well -- perfect if you just want your phone to act like a phone and little more.

Sony Ericsson’s LiveView Accessory Gives You a Quick Look at Your Phone

Accessories for devices these days are usually run-of-the-mill. Aside from a few cool ones from Samsung – such as the keyboard dock for the Galaxy Tab and the USB-HDMI out for their Galaxy S devices – they are always pretty much the same. Sony Ericsson’s come up with a cool one for their Xperia phones, however, called LiveView. This isn’t the official marketing term, but I like to call it a “bundle of joy the size of a pocket watch.” Too corny for you yet? I know, it’s early and I haven’t had my McDonald’s roasted coffee.

Anywho, LiveView is a small LCD screen that – at a glance – shows you a count of notifications on your device from different sources such as email, Twitter, Facebook, calendar reminders, missed calls, and more. It even allows you to control your device’s music. Take a look at the video above to get the full gist of things.

It communicates with your device using Bluetooth and it’s said that the battery will last four days on a full charge – not too bad. They list official support for all of their Xperia devices, of course, but profess that it works with many other brands with Android 2.0+ so a long list of those of us without Sony Ericsson phones don’t get left out. I hope this wasn’t the exciting announcement Ericsson’s CEO was talking about last week. I still want my PSP Phone. Nevertheless, this is still pretty cool. Anyone looking to snatch one up?

Sony To Launch Google TV On October 12th

We have been hearing more and more about Google TV recently, now Sony has announced that they will launch the worlds first Internet television on October the 12th.

Sony has sent out invites to a special event they are holding in New York on October the 12th 2010, and they are claiming it is the launch of the worlds first Internet TV
.

Sony obviously intends to start selling their new Google TV enabled TVs fairly soon, probably before Christmas. It will be interesting to see what they come up with and how Google TV is integrated into their range of televisions.

We can expect to see many more manufacturers following suit and launching Google TV enabled televisions over the next 12 month, we suspect Google TV is going to be very popular.

Sony Ericsson says it has 'no plans' for any new Symbian

Symbian has taken some pretty hard hits as of late, and it's just been dealt another big one -- Sony Ericsson has confirmed earlier talk that it is indeed abandoning the operating system. As Sony Ericsson spokesperson Aldo Liguori bluntly puts it, "we have no plans for the time being to develop any new products to the Symbian Foundation standard or operating system." That doesn't completely close the door on Symbian, of course, and Liguori also said that Sony Ericsson still remains a member of the Symbian Foundation. Those future meetings should certainly be interesting, no?

Video: Sony Introduces 12 New Walkman Models

Sony Japan unleashed [JP] a total of 12 new Walkman today, split into three series (E, S, and A). The players from the E and S series will hit Japanese stores on October 9, with the A Series following on November 13.

Sony Ericsson wants to be largest Android handset maker

Sony Ericsson is aiming high, as the company said it wants to be the world’s biggest supplier of Android phones. It has its work cut out for it.

Sony Ericsson said it has about 17% of the Android market, although it didn’t cite the sources. We’re not huge fans of its Xperia lineup but these devices are popular in Europe.

It’s going to be a tough row to hoe for Sony Ericsson to climb to the top of the Android heap because there is some stiff competition but there are a few steps it can take to get there.

First, let’s talk about the competition. I’m fairly certain Motorola has the most market share with its Droid lineup. For a lot of America, the Android platform means very little, as many consider “Droid” the little, green robot. Motorola is chugging along as Verizon’s favorite handset maker and that shouldn’t change for at least a year.

If Motorola isn’t the king of Android, then it has to be HTC. The company has a great lineup of devices like the EVO 4G and Droid Incredible and it should also see a strong boost with the upcoming G2 for T-Mobile.

Samsung is also making a strong Android push, as it is in the middle of an admirable Galaxy S launch which will bring its devices to the top six U.S. carriers. With its tablets, it will also bring the heat with Android.

Sony Ericsson needs to deliver some killer handsets, as Xperia devices with old software won’t cut it in the modern market. We’ve heard rumbling that the company will use the Google mobile operating system to make its much-anticipated PlayStation Phone and that would be a great step in the right direction.

The company also needs to cozy up to American carriers, as that’s how a company moves units in this market.

What do you think of Sony Ericsson’s chances?

Sony Ericsson Wants to Be Largest Android Smartphone Maker

Smartphone maker Sony Ericsson, once fully committed to Symbian UIQ interface before going with Windows Mobile on its first XPERIA handset, is now eyeing the burgeoning Android market.

According to Sony Ericsson, the company intends on being the number one supplier of Android smartphones in terms of sheer market share, which is quite a lofty goal considering that Sony Ericsson only has a 17 percent worldwide market share for Android handsets, and its X10 Android smartphone, running on Android 1.6, was only recently launched in the U.S. with carrier AT&T.

Sony Ericsson will probably have an uphill battle with its goal. In the U.S., it will have to battle against Motorola and Verizon Wireless for the Droid brand supremacy, and worldwide the maker will need to fight a tough war against HTC with its growing Android portfolio and Samsung with its latest aggressive push behind the Galaxy brand.

Sony Ericsson A8i to Launch On China Mobile

Sony Ericsson will launch the A8i handset for the largest carrier in the most heavily populated place on the planet. China Mobile will be home to Sony Ericsson’s first TD-SCDMA smartphone, the A8i, and will be featuring the carrier’s OMS (Open Mobile System) 2.0 platform, which uses Google’s code and is like the Chinese version of Android. The A8i is very Xperia-X10-esque and share some similar specs, too.

According to CNet Asia:

"The A8i comes with a 3.5-inch 854 x 480-pixel touchscreen, 3.5mm audio jack, microSD card slot and 5-megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash. Connectivity features include Bluetooth stereo A2DP, Assisted-GPS for navigation, Wi-Fi and support for China Multimedia Mobile Broadcasting (CMMB) mobile TV standard. Sony Ericsson’s TrackID, a service which lets users identify music over-the-air, will also be linked directly to China Mobile’s entertainment download offering for access to local content."

This is potentially good news for Sony Ericsson as China Mobile is a huge market. The A8i seems a decent enough handset, and if priced accordingly it may do well for the smartphone manufacturer’s first TD-SCDMA OMS platform. There is no official release date or pricing just yet, but Sony Ericsson says it plans to launch the device for China Mobile next quarter.

Sony Ericsson’s Xperia range is the “official mobile handset of the UEFA Champions League”

Sony Ericsson’s Xperia

Looks like we’ll be seeing fingers breakdancing around the place during the adverts in the football for the remainder of the season, as Sony Ericsson has just revealed that its Xperia smartphone range is the “official” smartphone of the UEFA Champions League.

We wouldn’t fancy being the poor PR person who has to teach Wayne Rooney how to synchronise his Exchange account for a possible forthcoming photo opportunity…

The ad will introduce “a new mobile application developed in conjunction with UEFA.com” which will presumably be exclusive to SE handsets. Here’s the full press release. WARNING: It uses the word “leverage”. It’s a serious business one, this. We’ve clearly been added to the grown-up mailing list.

PlayStation Phone from Sony Expected To Be Launched In October

Sony Ericson is making efforts on a phone that is using the platform of Google’s Android. This phone is expected to be released this year. Now gaming and communication would be beautifully blended in the PlayStation phone from Sony. This phone is reported to be out on the market by October.

The CVG in the month of June unveiled that a trademark is being developed for Sony device and it would be named ‘PlayView’. However, now there are more issues about the Sony cross held between a Captivate phone as well as a PSPGo.

Few features of the new phone have been revealed. It would include side-slider gaming controls and the QWERTY keyboard would not be a part of it. The D-pad would also be there but it would lack small joystick.

According to a report published by the Engadget, this new device is expected to have a long touchpad in order to get the analog controls. Apart from that, it would also have the standard PSP buttons and the shoulder buttons

The display would be quite large between 3.7 and 4.1 inches. WVGA would also be a part of it in order to promote better resolution. It is possible that there would be a 5 megapixel camera and a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU. At the initial stages, the phone would be available in black color with a highlight of silver while the gamepad area would be white or silver in color.

Sony Ericsson Plans Android 3 PlayStation Phone

Imagine if your Android cellphone could play PlayStation-like games. Now further imagine that in place of a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, it had a slight-out game controller, complete with D-pad, buttons and an analog control-strip. What you are imagining may already exist inside Sony Ericsson’s labs, and may be coming to you as soon as October of this year.

Engadget cites a “trusted source” inside Sony Ericsson and has some surprisingly detailed specs for the machine (which is seen in Engadget’s own mockup above). The phone, which will look something like a cross between a Samsung Captivate and a PSP Go, will probably be powered by a 1-GHz Snapdragon processor, sport a wide VGA-resolution screen of around four inches and possibly include a 5-MP camera.

Sounds great, right? There will also, the rumor goes, be a dedicated section of the already fragmented Android market for the games, which will be comparable in graphics quality to PSP games. The whole lot will be running on a specially-skinned version of the upcoming Android 3 (Gingerbread).

This is pretty much a PlayStation phone, and we don’t have to say how hot that would be. If this is true, it could be the first real phone-gaming rival to the iPhone, and will likely offer a very different style of game. The iPhone’s touch-screen is great for puzzlers and strategy games, but when you want to blast through a platformer or just go out and shoot some damn zombies, hardware controls are where it’s at.

I’m uncommonly excited about this rumor, not least because it means that I could likely hack it to run emulators for old consoles and get into some retro-games on my phone.

Sony planning PSP smartphone?

Rumours are spreading across the InterWebs that Sony Ericsson is working on a PlayStation branded smartphone using the Android 3.0 operating system.

It can sometimes be very difficult to work out where these sort of rumours originally came from, but this one can be clearly laid at the door of website Engadget. Although they're unable to provide any evidence beyond a 'trusted source'.

Said rumourmonger claims that the reason Sony Ericsson hasn't yet released an Android 2.0 device is because it's trying to jump the queue with a cross between a PSPgo and a Samsung Captivate. This apparently means it'll have a landscape slider with 'game controls' instead of a keyboard.

These controls will include a D-pad and a 'long touch pad' instead of analogue controllers - plus standard PlayStation face and shoulder buttons.

The screen is apparently between 3.7 and 4.1 inches in size with WVGA or higher resolution (so in layman's terms its very big and with a very sharp picture). A 5 megapixel camera is also being mooted and a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU.

We've no idea what a Snapdragon CPU is but apparently the graphics will be 'in the range of PSone or PSP games'. That seems surprisingly low tech and not a step-up from the current PSP, let alone the 3DS.
