SaskTel confirms BlackBerry Torch 9800 launching by “the end of this month”

Since SaskTel launched their 3G+ network they are releasing newer devices quicker… another addition is on the way and it’s the BlackBerry Torch 9800. SaskTel says this new touchscreen/QWERTY slider will be available by “end of this month”. Other carriers such as TELUS, Rogers, Bell and Virgin are all releasing this on September 24th.

No details on pricing but if they follow their previous trend the 3-year contract price will fall in line with the other carriers at $199.99, but the no-contract price will skyrocket for reason. For example, the Vibrant was recently released at $645 no-contract while Bell is selling it for $499.95 no contract. Want another example… the BlackBerry Pearl 3G is going for a massive $635 on SaskTel while Wind Mobile currently has it for $300. Hopefully the various price points drop.

AT&T Says BlackBerry Torch Sales Are Slow, iPhone and Android Taking All the Glory

Speculation has been running rampant about the BlackBerry Torch 9800 for AT&T not doing very well in sales. Today, Fred Devereux, President of Wireless Operations in the US West for AT&T, gave the impression that the carrier was a little disappointed and somewhat surprised in BlackBerry Torch sales. Funny, I’m not all that surprised about the turn out.

During the Mobile Future Forward event in Seattle, Devereaux said he was “surprised there hasn’t been a faster adoption” of the smartphone.

With the wildly popular iPhone 4, and the ridiculously priced iPhone 3GS at $99, how can he or AT&T be surprised? Let’s not forget the Samsung Captivate, a Galaxy S Android device, which is also a very appealing smartphone. Is anyone genuinely surprised that the BlackBerry Torch’s flame quickly cooled after its initial launch?

AT&T can’t place all the blame on the iPhone or Android, however. The Torch just isn’t striking or revolutionary enough to make people want to switch carriers for it. Unless your business deployed the BlackBerry slider and you have no other choice, you’re probably not going to want to switch to a fickle network unless it’s for the brand-spankin’ new iPhone 4.

Even for die-hard BlackBerry fans, the Torch 9800 was a questionable upgrade. The screen resolution made it seem like an ancient device, its weak processor causes the new OS to lag and BlackBerry App World just hit 10,000 apps! The iPad, having just launched in April of this year, already has 25,000 dedicated applications!

Devereux also noted that he was amazed that people were spending upwards of $200 on smartphones and that hardly anyone is picking up basic feature phones anymore.

OK, this guy is both shocked at slow Torch sales and the shift in average consumer buying trends? Is AT&T sure it wants this guy to be leading wireless operations?

Of course, shortly after all this AT&T released a statement that said it was pleased with BlackBerry Torch 9800 sales, although it didn’t seem to want to go beyond vague statements and give us hard numbers.

New iPods, so what?

The new iPodsNew iPods, so what?, editors choice have been touted as the most radical change in products yet, yet there’s a sense of Apple looking backwards, too, removing features added last year or returning to earlier designs.

So the new shuffle has buttons again. The shuffle is the tiniest, cheapest player and it means you can own an iPod for under £40. The new one is like an even diddier version of the one seen two years ago. Last year’s model took the buttons off the player and put the controls in the headphone lead instead. Great, unless you had your own favourite cans you wanted to use. The super-light shuffle is ideal for jogging, but the supplied headphones suited running not so much.

So the new one has click-wheel controls again. It’s pretty cool, though if you had the 4GB capacity edition before, you’ll have to edit your content now – it’s only available in a 2GB version.

More interesting is the fifth-generation nano. Apart from the disappointing, universally nicknamed “fat nano” two years ago, the flash-memory iPod nano range has gone from strength to strength. Last year’s iteration had a larger screen and a built-in video camera. Now, though, in what might be seen as a backward step, the screen has shrunk and the camera disappeared. Mind you, the new square screen is a 1.5-inch diameter, so it’s too small for comfortable video viewing, which is lucky because video playback has gone, too.

The key point is that the buttons have gone from the nano (nano’s loss is shuffle’s gain) and been replaced with a miniature touchscreen interface. In fact, if you can afford the price jump, this is the real deal for joggers as it comes with a built-in clip and is barely more than half the weight of last year’s nano, easily wearable.

Plus, it has a few simple applications, including a pedometer and Nike+ training program as well as an FM radio which will make it a good running companion. And it has 24-hour battery life, though you really ought to stop running before that.
Its operation is highly delightful and similar to the iPhone thanks to the icon layout and a speedy, responsive touchscreen. Even though the screen is small, this is a multi-touch screen. So if you clip the nano upside down, a two-fingered twist will spin the contents of the display. It’s so light and fun to use you really don’t miss the video camera. Though, please note, if you really want the earlier version, it’s available in the refurbished section of the Apple site at frankly bargain prices. The new one costs £129 (8GB) or £159 (16GB).

As for the camera, Apple’s view is that if you’re going to shoot video, you should choose HD recording and a bigger screen on which you can actually, you know, see it. By a lucky coincidence, the company has a product to suit – a new iPod touch with an HD video camera.

As with the iPhone 4, it means you can shoot and edit video on your portable and upload it to YouTube, say. You need to be in a wi-fi area for this – the touch has wi-fi built in. You can also take advantage of the front-facing camera and set up a FaceTime call. FaceTime, you’ll know, is the video calling over wi-fi feature which came with the iPhone 4. I’d say it’s unquestionably the best video calling application available on a mobile gadget. It looks great and is exceptionally easy to set-up. You can call from iPod touch to iPhone 4 and vice versa. Apple hasn’t revealed how many iPhone 4 users have actually made FaceTime calls so far, mind.

The new iPod touch also features the spectacularly impressive high-resolution 3.5-inch screen and speedy processor of the iPhone 4. It comes with the latest version of software, version 4.1, available to iPhone users too, downloadable from this evening. It’ll also bring Game Centre – a way to play games against remote players via wi-fi. The hardware looks near-identical to last year’s until you turn it side-on: the new iPod touch is noticeably thinner.

So should you buy any of them? All these products are definitely improvements on last year, unless you like shooting or watching movies on your nano, in which case grab one of last year’s pronto.

The new touch is the real standout. If you have a mobile phone and are envious of the iPhone’s hundreds of thousands of games, electronic books and other apps, this is an easy way to make up for it. Video editing is particularly good thanks to the excellent iMovie app and FaceTime calls will be cheaper than on your mobile (they’re free).

Of course, Apple’s trademark values (wowee styling, intuitive controls, solidly executed features) are across the range, but the essential upgrade is the touch.

Apple's iOS 4.1 software update for iPhone, iPod Touch arrives

Apple has started rolling out the iOS 4.1 software update for the iPhone and iPod Touch that CEO Steve Jobs announced would arrive this week.

The software includes the GameCenter venue for multiplayer games, 99 cent iTunes TV show rentals and HD video uploads to YouTube and MobileMe. It also brings HDR photography to the iPhone (but not iPod Touch), a setting in which multiple exposures are captured into a single, spruced-up image.

And the new software is also required if you hope to make FaceTime video calls between a Touch and an iPhone 4. Indeed, moments after installing iOS 4.1 on my iPhone 4, I successfully made a video connection with a Touch.

To install the new software, connect your Touch, or the iPhone 4, 3GS, or 3G to your computer via USB, click on your device under the Devices list in iTunes and click "Check for Update."

Fate of Carmine voting ends, $150K raised for charity

A Gears of War
3 campaign on Xbox Live, that asked users to vote whether or not the character of Clayton Carmine should live or die, has closed. The event raised $150K for the charity Child’s Play.

If you have played the previous entries in the Gears of War franchise, then you probably know that the Carmine family is a poor, doomed bunch of SOBs. Both previous entries featured a member of the Carmine brood, and both died horrible, but not entirely unsurprising deaths. In the first game, young recruit Anthony Carmine proved that reloading is important, and that enemy snipers do not make good friends. When Gears of War 2 was released, Ben Carmine, a plucky young rookie that might as well been a red-shirt-wearing extra on the original Star Trek series, made his debut. He lasted just slightly longer than his brother before dying horribly. The third and final Carmine brother, Clayton, is next up, but whether he becomes a hard-boiled, Locust-and-Lambent-killing angel of death, or a ticking time bomb with a life span roughly the same as a fly, remains to be seen thanks to a recent vote on Xbox Live.

Fans of the series were asked to shell out a few bucks for an avatar t-shirt that would be counted as a vote. One shirt read “Save Carmine,” while the other read “Carmine must die.” The shirt that was downloaded more often would seal the fate of Clayton, while the money would go towards the charity Child’s Play — a game industry charity founded to help brings toys and games to children in hospitals. Voting ended on Sept. 1, and developer Epic Games revealed at last weekend’s Penny Arcade Expo that the crew managed to raise $150,000 for the charity.

So will Clayton live to defend
the Carmine honor, perhaps going on to sire a new litter of adorable, but expendable Carmines of his own, or is the icy hand of death looking to complete the Carmine set? We will have to wait until Gears of War 3 is released as an Xbox 360 exclusive on April 5.

Samsung Galaxy Tab Includes A Super TFT LCD Display

A little more information about Samsung’s Android tablet, the Galaxy Tab has been revealed. It appears that the new Samsung tablet will come with a Super TFT LCD display and the reason behind this can be attributed to two factors.

The first is cost, with the Super TFT LCD display being cheaper to develop when compared to other display screen technologies that are available on the market today. The second reason that Samsung went with this display type has to do with the fact that it is more energy efficient which means that it will improve battery life, something that consumers will probably be looking for in a tablet computer.

It’s important to note that the Super TFT screens are different from the Super AMOLED screens that Samsung has been deploying in some of their other devices like the Galaxy S smartphones.

iPod Shuffle 4th Generation Gets Torn Down by iFixit

The core specifications of the Galaxy S are pretty well known. Up front is a WVGA 4-inch Super AMOLED touchscreen, while there’s a 5-megapixel camera on the back (which, on the Fascinate, is paired with an LED flash). Inside is Samsung’s own 1GHz Hummingbird processor running Android 2.1 Eclair with the TouchWiz 3.0 UI (also subject to some Verizon modifications); there’s also Bluetooth 3.0, WiFi b/g/n, EVDO Rev.A and 2GB of internal storage.

Design-wise, the Fascinate resembles the T-Mobile Galaxy S, with touch-sensitive menu, home, search and back keys on the front panel, volume rocker on the left, and an annoyingly-placed power button on the right. On top is the microUSB port – covered with a sliding door – and a 3.5mm headphone socket. The plastic back panel clips off to reveal a 1,500mAh battery, while the whole thing is slightly thicker to accommodate the flash (a compromise we’re happy with).

Nikon Coolpix S8100 gets 1080p video, S80 sprouts an OLED touchscreen

In addition to the intriguing new Coolpix P7000, Nikon also announced the Coolpix S8100 (pictured above) and S80 tonight -- sure, they're not the dramatic new models, but they're certainly respectable updates to the S8000 and S70. The S8100 actually learned one trick from the P7000: it's dropped the megapixel count to 12.1 from the S8000's 14.2 in order to improve light sensitivity -- it can now hit ISO 3200 natively, which isn't bad for a tiny cam with a 10x zoom. It's also got a new 1080p movie mode and a faster 10fps burst mode -- although we're told it can only burst five frames at a time, so that's not nearly as interesting. It'll hit later this month in a few colors for $299.

The S80 goes the other way, boosting the megapixel count to 14.1 from the S70's 12.1, and upping the 3.5-inch touchscreen to OLED. The touchscreen enables all the same snazzy tricks as on the new S1100pj, including the ability to draw right on your pictures, and and the 720p movie mode and 5x optical zoom are unchanged. It'll hit this fall in all sorts of colors for $329. Honestly, we're still not entirely sold on touchscreen controls for cameras to begin with, and on top of that we're definitely concerned that OLED will make a touchscreen camera virtually useless in daylight, but we'll wait to see this thing in person before we rain too hard on this parade. Check a pic of the S80 along with both press releases after the break.

Pocket-lint has had its hands on Kinect a couple of times now, first at the E3 launch and more recently at Gamescom and we're very impressed with what we've seen so far - it really is a bit of incredible tech.

And, with Kinect big cheeses hinting at "core" games and possibly even Windows Phone 7 Kinect-connectivity coming our way as well, it promises to be an interesting few months for Microsoft's gaming arm.

Nokia N8 Gets A Release Date

The Nokia N8 has finally got an official release date from Nokia after much speculation online.

The Nokia N8 will be released across networks from the 1st October , although it will be available direct from Nokia in the last couple of days in September. Infact, you can pre-order the mobile from Nokia direct right now with it costs £429.00 Sim-free.

We'd expect a marketing barrage over the next few weeks , as the N8 is the most important smartphone Nokia has launched in a long time.

It not only marks the introduction of the Symbian^3 operating system , but is also the first real feature phone launched by Nokia since the N900. They are no doubt aiming to take on the iPhone, Samsung Galaxy S and other top smartphones and it will take a great mobile and a big advertising spend to succeed.

We're not sure how many networks will carry the Nokia N8, but its been confirmed that Vodafone will be launching the mobile and will get it in an exclusive Lime green colour. We also know that both O2 and T-Mobile will be carrying the Nokia N8.
