Motorola prepping 4G USB modem for LTE networks, doesn't say which ones

Motorola is definitely tossing its hat in the LTE mobile broadband ring -- it just announced this plug-and-play USB-lte 7110 modem at the 4G World conference in Illinois. It's rated for FDD-LTE Category 3, meaning the little exclamation-point-shaped dongle is theoretically capable of 100Mbps download and 50Mbps upload speeds, and it's got a pair of omni-directional MIMO antennas to help you pull down as much of that juicy, low-latency data as Motorola's unnamed partners intend to squeeze. Just don't be fooled by the company's claims that this is the "first commercial 4G LTE device" -- we're pretty sure Samsung and LG have Moto beat. PR after the break.

Motorola ES400S earns its keep on Sprint in October

You may not remember the Motorola ES400 announced back in June; it's the first device to run Microsoft's Windows Embedded Handheld platform, after all -- an offshoot of WinMo 6.5.3 -- and doesn't have a whole lot of relevance to the average consumer. Well, let this be your refresher: Sprint has revealed that it intends to launch its own version of the phone, the ES400S, through a variety of Sprint sales channels next month, marking the first time an enterprise-oriented Moto has been branded and offered directly by a carrier.

It meets a variety of standards for ruggedness and includes a 3-inch VGA display, full QWERTY keyboard, 3.2 megapixel camera (which actually performs the barcode scanning duties, not a traditional laser scanner), 802.11a / b / g, GPS, and both CDMA with EV-DO Rev. A and GSM / HSPA for international use.

You get a 1540mAh battery in the box, but a whopping 3080mAh unit is available separately if you plan on enterprisin' away from a charger for days on end. "Qualified" businesses will be able to get in on the ES400S starting sometime before the end of October for $499.99, while average Joes will have the option of paying $549.99 on a new two-year deal. Follow the break for the press release.

Motorola overclocks the XT720 – UK and German owners get 720MHz upgrade

Here’s something interesting for owners of Motorola’s chunky XT720 Android phone – the company has released a software update that upgrades the stock processor speed to 720MHz. So it ought to feel a little quicker in operation. Plus the patch also introduces DLNA compatibility, for those of you into sharing your HD media with all your gadgets.

Here’s the explanation from Motorola:

"XT720 of either UK or German origin can now download new software that increases the processor speed (to 720mhz) and also introduces DLNA functionality. We have also produced a top 5 tips and tricks video to maximise the camera functionality of the device."

The XT720 shipped with its processor locked to 550MHz according to Motorola’s tech specs, so this is quite a leap. On the offchance there are any XT720 owners in the house, do let us know what difference it makes.

Motorola 'eager' to get into tablet market, but won't do so until next year

Motorola's been thinking about tablets for a while now, but according to Sanjay Jha, it won't be entering that flourishing new market segment until it's absolutely certain it'll have a product that's "competitive in the marketplace."

Depending on how you perceive the Droid X, Moto might arguably be said to already have a tablet out on sale, but rumors have mostly circulated around a 10-inch slate device, most probably in partnership with Verizon and most likely using Android 3.0 as its OS.

Google itself has admitted that Android won't be fit for tablets until Gingerbread is delivered, and Jha's reluctance to introduce any new hardware before 2011 seems to be motivated by a corresponding desire to have the latest and greatest version on board from the start. Can't say we blame him.

Motorola Defy with Android officially headed to T-Mobile USA

Motorola has just announced that the Moto Defy is coming to T-Mobile USA, so it’s not made for Europe only, as previously thought.

The Defy will be presented in the US later today during the 25th season premiere of “The Oprah Winfrey Show”.

It will be on sale at T-Mobile in time for the holiday season – probably at about the same time with the myTouch HD.

It’s not clear yet what version of Android the Motorola Defy will run at launch, but it’s either 2.1, or 2.2 Froyo. The handset is dust proof, scratch and water resistant, and features a 3.7 WVGA touchscreen display, MotoBlur, GPS, Wi-Fi, DLNA, CrystalTalk technology, and 5MP autofocus camera with Flash.

R2-D2 themed Droid 2 dock unveiled through contest

The Star Wars R2-D2 edition Droid 2 has a lot of Android fans talking, and a contest by Amazon has released a matching peripheral: The R2-D2 Edition dock that perfectly matches the handset

In a “treasure hunt” type of contest, the lucky winner David Holt followed clues to a Star Wars book on Amazon. After copying the ISBN number of that book into a code input screen, he unlocked photos of the dock and won himself both a free handset and the dock. Not a bad way to drive interest in a new handset as well as introduce a new item.

Motorola i897 Ferrari Special Edition announced for Mexico and Brazil with Argentina to follow in October

It was back in May when we first spotted at that point still unannounced Motorola i897 Amphora clamshell and now it’s here. Actually, it’s in parts of Latin America where NII Holdings launched the phone under the name Motorola i897 Ferrari Special Edition — Mexico and Brazil are the first markets to get this Ferrari-branded device with Argentina launch set for October of this year.

Specs wise, we’re talking about an iDEN-based device which obviously enables push-to-talk capability. Moreover, there are two screens (2.2-inch QVGA internal and 1.8-inch 128×160 external), 2-megapixel camera with digital zoom, media player with dedicated music/video playback keys, Bluetooth and a microSD memory card slot. Of course, tons of Ferrari branded content is pre-loaded with the i897, including skins and themes, wallpapers, video clips, ringtones as well as the Ferrari GT: Evolution game by Gameloft.

Motorola launches Android-powered Ming A1680, MT810 and XT806 in China

Motorola has launched not one, not two, but three new Android smartphones in China, all part of the Ming series and all coming with “Ming styling” (thus being touchscreen devices with transparent flip covers): A1680, MT810 and XT806.

Motorola MT810 (aka Moto Beihai) is available via China Mobile and uses OPhone OS 2.0.

It features a 3.2 inch screen, TD-SCDMA, mobile TV, “a suite of pre-loaded intelligent business applications”, 720p HD video playback, and D1 (720 x 480) video recording.

Motorola XT806 (Qilin) runs Android 2.1 and is launched by China Telecom. It comes with CDMA/EVDO and GSM connectivity, 3.2 inch display, GPS, and HD (720p) video recording.

Made for China Unicom, the Motorola A1680 (also known as Moto Lucky 3G) features: 3.1-inch AMOLED display, WAPI, Wi-Fi, GPS, “a sixth-generation SoftStylus handwriting system”, access to Motorola SHOP4APPS, and 5MP camera.

All three Ming Android smartphones are designed specifically for China and they won’t be launched in other markets.

According to Motorola, “more than half the Android smartphones sold in China in the first half of 2010 were Motorola devices,” so these new Mings will probably sell well, too.

Android Powered Motorola Ming Devices, A1680, MT810 and XT806

Motorola is rolling out three new Android powered devices in their Ming lineup, the A1680, MT810 and the XT806. The A1680 comes to China Unicom, the MT810 will be featured on China Mobile and the XT806 will be coming to China Telecom.

All three feature a very unique transparent front cover, which for the A1680 is more than just for curb appeal. On the A1680, with the cover up, the screen is a traditional resistive display, allowing for the use of a pen and with the cover down, the display can be used as a capacitive display to be manipulated with your hands. The MT810 and the XT806′s covers are purely cosmetic.

Mysterious Motorola Slider Makes Another, More In-Focus, Appearance

An extremely blurry picture of a Droid-eyed slider made the rounds a month or so back — so blurry, in fact, that I’m pretty sure they added blur in Photoshop. Well, some in-focus shots of the device have surfaced, and while it doesn’t appear to have outward Droid branding, it does have the familiar eye. Not a lot of information is available, unfortunately.

But I will say that it’s a nicer-looking slider device than the Blackberry Torch, which looks busy, chromey, and chubby in comparison. Who knows how they compare otherwise, but if i had to judge these books by their covers, the Motorola XT300 wins hands-down.

BlackBerry Pearl 3G 9100, Milestone XT720 Coming to Wind Mobile?

Rumour has it Canadian carrier Wind Mobile will be picking up the BlackBerry 9100 and the Motorola Milestone (a.k.a. Motoroi) XT720. These would mark Wind’s second BlackBerry and Android phone, preceded by the BlackBerry Bold 9700 and the Huawei U8100, respectively.

Aside from size and form factor, the BlackBerry 9100 is mostly equivalent to the 9700: it has Wi-Fi, 3G, GPS, an HVGA display, 3.2 megapixel camera, 256 MB of memory, and a 624 MHz processor. The only real difference spec-wise is that Pearl 3G handles Wi-Fi 802.11 n, which from my experience isn’t that big of a leap from g. Overall, it’s nice little device - check out our review for the full rundown.

The Motorola XT720 will be Wind’s highest-end device, having an 8 megapixel camera with HD video recording, 3.7″ 480 x 854 touchscreen, Wi-Fi, GPS, 3G supporting up to 10.2 Mbps, and running Android 2.1. The XT720 has been available across Europe and on Cincinnati Bell for awhile now, but it looks like Wind will be the first Canadian carrier to get it. We had some hands-on time with the XT720 shortly after it had made its Korea debut – take a look at the video over here.

Keep an eye on the Wind Mobile online store for these two phones – the Pearl 3G should be showing up in the next couple of days for $320, with the XT720 coming shortly after.

Motorola Milestone XT720 Gets Caught In The Wind

Canadian cellular provider Wind Mobile is supposed to be picking up the Motorola Milestone XT720,

which was only available in Europe and more recently on Cincinnati Bell in the US. Currently, Wind only offers

the Huawei 8100, an entry level Android phone, and looks to be beefing up their line up of Android phones with this inclusion.

The exact date that the phone will be available is yet to be released, but is expected to be available in a few short weeks.

Motorola Droid 2 for Verizon First Impressions

I’ve recently been assimilated into the cult of Android. So much so that I’m ditching my iPhone 4 and AT&T in favor of the Droid X, which I have on order from Verizon and due to arrive soon. I chose the Droid X after using it for 2 weeks and then comparing it to the HTC Incredible.

I made my choice before I had any real one on one time with the Motorola Droid 2 though because the large Droid X screen won me over.

Today a Droid 2 loaner device showed up on my doorstep, so I’m anxious to find out if I’ll end up regretting my quick decision to go with the DX.

I’ve only had this phone out of the box for about an hour, so this is just going to be a quick first impressions post. I plan to do an actual review in a few days and we’ll hear Bryan’s thoughts on this device as well.

I currently have a herd of Android phones from Verizon at my house. There’s the Droid X (Left), Droid 2 (Center) and the HTC Incredible (Right). I also have the LG Ally, but it’s not pictured here as it’s not really in the same league as these higher end smartphones.

As you’ll notice, the Droid 2 has about the same footprint and 3.7 inch screen size as the HTC Incredible.

It’s quite a bit chunkier than the DX and Incredible though. Of course, it’s no wonder due to its built in sliding keyboard.

Even though the Droid 2 is thicker than the others, its size still hits a sweet spot in my opinion because it’s not too large and not too small. Like the Incredible, it fits comfortably in your hand and doesn’t look awkward when used as a phone like some people might say of the Droid X. The fact that it also includes a keyboard is a big bonus for some people.

Motorola Charm hitting T-Mobile on August 25 for $75

T-Mobile USA just dropped the knowledge on Twitter that it'll be carrying the Motorola Charm starting next Wednesday, August 25 -- but what it failed to mention is pricing.

For what it's worth, the company does specifically say that it'll be "affordable" -- and although a marketing department's definition of "affordable" can be very different from ours, we're encouraged by a handful of previous rumors that there would be ways to get it for free on contract.

If you need us to jog your memory, the Charm is a cute little portrait QWERTY Android device with a Kodak-branded 3 megapixel cam and landscape display, giving it a rare form factor that could very well appeal to a whole new audience (read: BlackBerry folks). So, how much would you pay for it?

Hands-Free Bluetooth Headset For Blackberry Torch 9800 From Motorola

Considering that a good chunk of Blackberry owners are businessmen who might be always on the move, the regular low-cost bluetooth headsets might not be helpful to these users for two reasons – Firstly, these headsets cannot endure the wear and tear that you can expect with regular outdoor use and secondly, the noise-cancellation on these devices is pretty poor making them unusable outdoors.

Motorola has announced that their new H790 bluetooth headset is now compatible with the recently launched Blackberry Torch 9800 smartphone. The device makes use of a CrystalTalk technology that not only cancels noise but also suppresses wind that can hinder conversation while you are traveling at high speeds.

Additional feaures on the Motorola H790 headset include “voice prompts“. This feature will audibly tell the user how to pair up the device and also make other notifications like when mute is activated or to let the user know which phone is ringing (supposing you have paired up more than one phone – which is possible with the device).

Motorola Droid 2: Everything You Need to Know

Find out everything you need to know about Motorola's Droid 2, the successor to the original Droid and a competitor to the Droid X and Droid Incredible.

The Droid is reborn. Well, reborn again, we guess, since there have already been two other phones bearing the Droid moniker following the success of the original Droid last holiday season. The Droid 2 now joins the HTC Droid Incredible and fellow Motorola Droid X at the forefront of Verizon’s Droid lineup, replacing its predecessor. What does Motorola’s Droid 2 switch up? Take a look.

et’s start with what’s not new. The Droid 2 has the same 3.7-inch LCD, 5-megapixel rear camera with LED flash and 720 x 480 video capabilities as the original Droid. Even the phone’s outside dimensions and weight are identical.

However, processor speed leaps from 550MHz to 1GHz, which should make it much more competitive with the latest group of Android challengers, like Samsung’s Galaxy S. Internal storage shoots from 256MB to 8GB, while the size of the included microSD card shrinks from 16GB to 8GB, leaving them with about the same total storage capacity out of the box.

Motorola has also managed to tweak the software enough to deliver significantly more battery life from the same size batter: 9.6 hours of talk time instead of 6.4, and 13.1 days of standby instead of 11.3. It will also run Android 2.2, also known as Froyo, right out of the box, though the Droid will get an update to 2.2 shortly

Motorola Droid 2 now official, original Droid retired

Verizon Wireless has finally, officially launched the Motorola Droid 2, although weeks of leaks have already shown customers the price, specs and release date.

The device will hit stores on Thursday the 12th, with online pre-sales starting tomorrow morning.

Motorola's new flagship will sell for $200 with 2-year contract, or $600 without.

Furthermore, once all the inventory is depleted, the aging original Droid will be retired.

The Droid 2 is very similar to its older brother, but with a few key differences. The sequel has a powerful 1GHz processor and twice the RAM, as well as a redone keyboard.

Many owners of the original Droid complained about the slide-out keypad, which was off center in order to add a directional pad which was practically useless. The Droid 2 has a more centered keypad.

Additionally, the Droid 2 is silver-on-blue, includes Android 2.2 Froyo, and has a new Motorola "skin" just like the Droid X.
