Acer Liquid Metal gets a little brother

Acer has taken the opportunity to reveal two new phones at CES this week, the Liquid Mini and the beTouch E210.

In October last year Acer announced the Liquid Metal, the latest version of its smartphone line, which became available in the UK in December. A reasonably spec'd device it failed to cause much of a stir and can still only be purchased through a limited number of outlets. At around £300, the price wasn't extortionate and now it seems that Acer are changing their tack. Judging by the specs it looks like both the Liquid Mini and beTouch E210 will fall firmly into the budget category.

Acer Aspire RevoView network media streamer ships

Hard to say if it's too little, too late, but one thing's for darn sure -- Acer definitely has a lot of competition to shake off if it wants this Aspire RevoView to truly succeed. Announced originally way back in May, this here network media streamer is just now gaining an image, price and release date. It's able to fetch content from USB hard drives, an internal 3.5-inch HDD, a memory card slot or the world wide web, but the latter seems contained to just YouTube, Picasa and Flickr for the time being. It'll push things out via an HDMI socket on the rear, and the bundled remote will keep your keister firmly planted while it's in operation. No word on whether or not this fellow will ever leave the confines of the UK, but it'll go on sale there next week for £119.99 ($193).

Acer Aspire One Happy – officially launched

Acer officially announced the 10.1-inch laptop Acer Aspire One Happy, which is characterized by its pastel colors, available in blue, green, pink and purple. In early September rumors appeared of a new netbook model, very colorful and joyful from Acer: Aspire One Happy. Now Aspire One Happy was officially launched and is distinguished by special casing in pastel shades of blue, purple, green or pink.

Beyond the performance of a standard mini laptop, Acer Aspire One Happy wants to offer a certain good feeling, happiness and relaxation, through the great color casing. Thus, purple (Lavender Purple) inspired elegance, sophistication and originality, while the pink (Pink Candy) is playful and adds femininity. Green (Lime Green) explodes with energy and vitality, while blue (Blue Hawaii) makes you think about the ocean and the freedom of heaven. In short, the new Aspire One Happy is an accessory for all fashion-conscious people.

Technical specifications and other details for this Acer mini include:

Acer Aspire One D255 gets in on the dual core action

The dual core Intel Atom N550 netbooks are coming thick and fast now, and the latest model to be announced is the Acer Aspire One D225.

Now, if you don't want to dance the dual-core dance, you can instead opt for the old N450 - but you're a Pocket-lint reader and therefore a forward thinker, so there's no chance of that.

The N550 is a 10.1-inch netbook with a 1024 x 600 display. As well as the dual-core chip, you've also got DDR3 RAM and an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3150, that supports Microsoft DirectX 9.

You'll get 250GB of HDD space to store all of your media, and transferring to and from it shouldn't be a problem with Bluetooth 3.0 as an option.

Connectivity is taken care of by Wi-Fi and 3G (again, optional) and you'll also find a webcam and fast Ethernet on board too.

You'll get up to 8 hours of battery life and the Aspire One D255 comes with the Acer MiniGo adapter that has a wall mount design and is a third lighter than typical adapters; saving a third on charging time.

Available from November in four colours: black, red, brown, or white; prices start from £229, although you're looking at a minimum of £279 for the N550 model.

Acer Aspire One D255

If you're looking to buy a netbook, chances are good that price is your number-one purchasing factor. If so, you'll perk up at the latest revision of Acer's Aspire One netbook, the D255, which starts at a rock-bottom $249 with a three-cell battery. (We tested an upgraded version with a six-cell battery, at $349.) With the D255, Acer rolls out an eye-pleasing, light netbook for those unconcerned with squeezing out the last drop of performance.

It's an enticing product for anyone watching their pennies, while delivering a—very—slight performance edge among low-end netbooks. We thought that the addition of a dual-core processor would give it enough oomph to distinguish it from its single-core competition in the bargain basement, but the difference wasn't all that great in our tests.

Let's start with the positives. At 2.8 pounds and with a 10.1-inch screen, this netbook is a very compact package you won't mind carrying around. We loved being able to throw it in a bag, barely feeling the weight on our shoulder. It comes in four colors: black, silver, red, and blue. We tested the blue, which is attractive but not flashy, a middle-ground color for either work or play.

Acer Aspire One D255 with dual-core Atom hits at $330

It was only a matter of time before Acer let out the pricing / availability details on its dual-core Atom netbook, and as we could have predicted, the Taiwanese company's smacked an extremely enticing pricetag on this one. Ringing up at an aggressive $329.99, the 2.2-pound D255 looks almost identical to the D260 -- yes, even those with the worst of cataracts could tell it's an Aspire One from afar -- but in terms of specs it's got that notable difference of a brand new dual-core Atom N550 processor.

But not to worry, even though it's now the cheapest dual-core netbook around, it's still got the netbook standards -- including 1GB of RAM, 250GB hard drive and six-cell battery. The single-core version will go for $269.99, but we do have to say that shelling out that additional $50 for that extra core does buy you slightly faster performance (see our HP Mini 5103 review for some Atom N550 performance results). Sounds mighty tempting to us, but it still doesn't make us forget about that Chrome OS netbook Acer's been promising.

Acer Aspire TimelineX series updated with new processor options

It really does feel like it was just yesterday that Acer released its new TimelineX series, but believe it or not, it's processor upgrade time for the thin and light lappie line. The 11.6-inch Aspire TimelineX 1830T will now be available with ultra-low voltage Core i3, i5 and i7 CPU options, though Acer's pushing the $900 Core i7 680UM-powered version (the 1830T-68U118) rather hard.

If you're looking for that sort of power in a 3.1-pound chassis, it's not all that bad of a deal, especially considering the similarly spec'd Lenovo IdeaPad U160 costs north of $1,000. We are a bit skeptical of Acer's eight hour battery life claim on that one, however.

The other TimelineX machines -- the 13.3-inch 3820T, 14-inch 4820T and the 15.6-inch 5820T -- are also being injected with more standard voltage Core i3 and i5 processor options, and those will start around the $700 mark. All the new models should be available at retailers soon, and those dying for some more configuration details should hit the break for the full press release.
