Crosley CR6002A Revolution turntable looks nothing like a normal record player

When I was a kid, my mom had a huge collection of vinyl records that she played on a big old record player. Today we all listen to digital tracks for the most part or CDs, but they are still some that like to listen to vinyl. If you are one of the vinyl lovers and have been looking for a new portable turntable Crosley has an interesting offering.

The player is called the Crosley Revolution CR6002A. The thing looks nothing like that record player that my mom had as a kid. It reminds me of something that would have been inside an old Jukebox. The edges of the record look to be hovering over the center of the player and are exposed. The turntable is belt driven.

It has USB connectivity for connecting to a computer and has software that will allow you to turn those vinyl records into digital tracks. The Revolution has 33 1/3 and 45 rpm speeds and an integrated FM transmitter. Full range dynamic stereo speakers are integrated into the device as well. It sells for $149.99 and will be offered in several colors. you cna see a video of the turntable here, sadly embedding is blocked using Vimeo Plus.

Imation Apollo D300 pairs 2TB of storage with USB 3.0

Decisions, decisions. The $200 price range tends to be reserved for happy shiny smartphones in our minds nowadays, but spare a thought for the demure hard drive as well. Imation's just announced an overhaul of its Apollo line of external plate spinners, with the headliner being the Expert D300 unit you see above.

Accompanied by its very own detachable stand and backup software, this $220 USB 3.0 drive promises oodles of room and a decent turn of speed as well. Set for an October launch, it'll find lower price points for archivists with needs closer to 500GB or 1TB in size, and there's also a selection of classically minded USB 2.0 HDDs for the more frugal among you -- learn more about them in the full press release after the break.

DeviceVM unleashing MeeGo on Splashtop PCs,

Got "Smart On," "Quick Start," "Express Gate," "QuickWeb," "Latitude ON" or even the plain vanilla Splashtop instant-on OS embedded in your PC? Chances are, sometime next year, you'll be getting a MeeGo app-capable upgrade. Splashtop manufacturer DeviceVM has just promised a MeeGo-based version of Splashtop to all current OEM partners for distribution in the first half of next year, and you should be able to simply upgrade the instant-on client in your existing PC. We spoke to DeviceVM in person at IDF 2010, and were told it's not quite as easy as it sounds -- for one thing, the Splashtop MeeGo Remix, as it's called, is still in the early stages, and it's going to be up to the ASUS, Acers and Dells of the world to actually roll it out.

HP's committed to delivering an free, transitional version of Splashtop for its machines that will allow end-users to easily upgrade, however. What you're looking at above on this Lenovo S10-3t is the first step in the process -- MeeGo with Splashtop branding and some simple touchscreen drivers. To make up for the relative boredom, DeviceVM showed off something else moderately neat -- a port of its Splashtop Remote app to MeeGo that allows a tiny HP Mini to seamlessly remote into a Windows PC.

iPhone Smartphone Market Share Drops, Whilst Android Rises

According to comScore, Apple’s share of the smartphone market has reduced over the last quarter, whilst Google’s Android has risen. Apple were sitting at 25.1 percent ay the end of April 2010, but it seems that this is now down to 23.8 percent at the end of July.

Google on the other hand has increased their share, which was standing at 12 percent at the end of April 2010, to 17 percent at the end of July 2010, RIM has also declined slightly over the last quarter although it is still in the lead with a 39.3 percent market share.

53.4 million people in the U.S. owned smartphones during the three months ending in July, up 11 percent from the corresponding April period. RIM was the leading mobile smartphone platform in the U.S. with 39.3 percent share of U.S. smartphone subscribers, followed by Apple with 23.8 percent share. Google saw significant growth during the period, rising 5.0 percentage points to capture 17.0 percent of smartphone subscribers. Microsoft accounted for 11.8 percent of Smartphone subscribers, while Palm rounded out the top five with 4.9 percent. Despite losing share to Google Android, most smartphone platforms continue to gain subscribers as the smartphone market overall continues to grow.

Android is definitely becoming a very popular platform, and with the range of different handsets being released on a regular basis their market share is bound to continue to rise.

Motorola Grasp QWERTY phone available now at US Cellular

Announced by Motorola back in July, the Moto Grasp is now available in the US – not via MetroPCS, as I initially thought it would be, but via US Cellular.

The Motorola Grasp is a QWERTY feature phone with a 2.2 inch display, “advanced contact search”, threaded messaging, sGPS, stereo Bluetooth, 3.5mm headset jack, 1.3MP camera, and MicroSD card support.

The Grasp unveiled by Moto in July was eco-friendly, coming in a housing that’s 100% recyclable at end of life, and being BFR and PVC free. I’m not sure if this applies to US Cellular’s version, too, because Motorola doesn’t say too much in the press release announcing the handset’s availability.

US Cellular sells the Motorola Grasp for $39.95 with a 2-yr contract agreement, or $179.95 free of any agreement. You can buy the phone online at the carrier’s website.

Doubling down: Altec's Octiv Duo

Earlier this year we reviewed the Altec Lansing Octiv Mini iPhone-iPod speaker and praised its compact size and attractive minimalist styling. Now Octiv is expanding the line with the dual-dock Octiv Duo, which is nearly double the size of its smaller sibling and costs about twice as much--a still affordable $99.

As with the Octiv Mini, Altec keeps things simple. After all, why build in a bunch of extras like an LCD for the clock, an AM/FM radio, or fancy alarm systems when they're all basically redundant to the impressive built-in capabilities of the iPhone or iPod Touch? Instead, like iHome, Altec Lansing focused on designing custom apps that enhance the usability of the speaker dock.

When you first plug in your iPhone or iPod Touch, it will prompt you to install not one but two free apps: Alarm Rock and Music Mix. Alas, once installed, the apps won't automatically launch when you dock your device; that's an Apple issue.

Since we last saw the Alarm Rock app, Altec has improved it a bit. In addition to snooze and sleep modes, you still get the capability to set alarms only on certain days so you could, for example, have a weekend alarm and a weekday alarm; you can set the alarm to go off on individual days as well, such as Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. There are also a handful of themes to customize the clock's appearance. You could, alternately, use any other clock or alarm apps you'd prefer.

Logitech launches new wireless trackball

NOT EVERYONE LIKES to use a mouse and touchpads are something of a hit and miss depending on what you prefer. The third alternative, the good old trackball is still around for those that are looking for a different way to control their computer and Logitech has announced a new model today in the Wireless Trackball M570. The new model features a tweaked design which should make it more comfortable to hold than the older TrackMan Wheel and Logitech has also added a few other new features.

The most obvious change is the blue trackball, where Logitech in the past has used red trackballs. It has been paired up with a new laser sensor in favour of an LED sensor found in Logitech’s older trackballs, which is meant to improve the accuracy. As with the previous models the M570 features a pair of buttons as well as a scroll wheel, but Logitech has also added a pair of additional buttons that are programmable, but defaults to back/forward buttons for web navigation.

As with all new cordless mice and keyboards from Logitech, the M570 also features the tony Unifying receiver which allows multiple devices to be connected to the one and same receiver. The receiver can also be stored inside the battery compartment in case you’d like to take the M570 with you when you travel. It’s powered by a single AA battery which Logitech claims is good for up to 18-months of battery life and the M570 also features a battery power indicator and an on/off switch.

At $59.99 we can’t but feel that the M570 is somewhat overpriced, considering that the older model has a list price of $49.95 and the M570 doesn’t look like a significant improvement with the exception for the new receiver. Then again, trackballs are something of a niche product and it’s still significantly cheaper than Kensington’s equivalent wired models and that doesn’t take into the account that it might help relieve RSI

Hands-on: LG Optimus One

This week is a big week when it comes to phone launches. Today, we saw the launch of LG’s Optimus One and Optimus Chic, two Android 2.2 (Froyo) smartphones that will help the Korean electronics maker close the gap with rivals Samsung, HTC and Apple.

Today also saw Nokia’s much-touted “come-back” launch of smartphones, which sadly, turned out to be more of the same Symbian numbers that we saw earlier this year with the N8. I did not manage to get a hands-on with the Nokias, but Engadget seems to be raving about them.

Personally, I find the LG phones more interesting. The Optimus One (LG-P500), for one, looks the part with a 129-gram frame that comes with a 3.2-inch screen (320×480) and support for all your regular Froyo goodies, like support for Flash webpages, multi-tasking and Wi-Fi tethering.

The Chic has similar specs except it has soft instead of hard buttons and a smaller-capacity battery (1,250mAh versus 1,500mAh). I’m a little curious why LG has not differentiated the two phones more, for example, in different screen sizes. They just seem a little too similar.

But how different are the two LG phones from every new Android phone that seems to sprout out nowadays? One useful and unique feature is turn-by-turn navigation for Asia. Called NDrive, this LG app provides what the Google Nexus One didn’t have for Asia, that is, prompts to turn the right way when using Google Maps to navigate around town.

If there’s something I think LG can improve on, it is CPU speed. Though most tasks that I tried in a quick hands-on at today’s Singapore launch proved easy enough for both phones’ 600MHz CPUs and suffered no perceivable lag, wouldn’t it be nice to have a 1GHz powerhouse in there, just as Samsung and HTC have for their flagship phones?

Launched in 90 countries, the Optimus One will go on sale in Singapore in mid-October. There are no details on prices yet. At the time of writing, I also don’t have price or availability information for the Chic.
