ABI Research: Mobile Internet Usage And Mobile Broadband Technology Continuously Growing

According to the ABI Research report, approximately c of the world’s population will subscribe to mobile-broadband services and due to the increasing Internet-surfing smartphone users it will boost to 1.5 billion in 2015.

Mobile Operator and mobile providers are starting to capitalize the increasing revenue growth in mobile broadband services, according to a new report.

“Mobile operators are starting to see burgeoning revenue growth in mobile broadband services,” sai Jeff Orr, ABI Research Principal Analyst, and added: “The cellular modems used to connect internet services to mobile devices are, therefore, gaining in popularity.”

The research firm also noted that while smartphones are used to access the internet by the majority of mobile internet subscribers, a continuously increasing number are using devices such as iPads, laptops, and netbooks.

The research also showed that portable Internet device such as USB dongles are still the most common devices being offered by majority of the network operators as they provide a number of advantages over PC cards, internal Mini-Cards, USB Modems, and mobile-hotspot routers.

“They are easy to carry and flexible to use, so it is very convenient for users to maintain internet access when they are away from home or office,” the research firm added.

In a different research conducted by ABI that was released last month, ABI highlights the increasing sales of smartphones such as Research in Motion’s BlackBerry devices and Apple’s iPhone devices. Researchers concluded that smartphones will be equipped with mobile Internet browsers within the next five years.

Nokia N8 launches September 30, says senior manager

Tapani Kaskinen is Nokia's Senior Comms Manager, so it's fitting that he'd be the first person from the company to communicate a solid release date for its long-awaited N8 handset. The gent in question told Finnish newspaper Kauppalehti that advance orders of the N8 will "begin shipping 30 September." Bear in mind we're chewing through a machine translation here, but that part's pretty unmistakable. It also meshes perfectly with earlier speculation surrounding Nokia purchasing Google AdWords -- that indicated a one-week exclusive starting on September 23rd for Nokia's UK online store, which, if you do the math, again points to a wide release at the end of the month. We asked Nokia about it ourselves and they're remaining mum on the matter, but chances are looking pretty good that October will start with the N8 finally in eager users' hands.

Huawei plans first Android phone for Australia

Chinese manufacturer Huawei late yesterday said it was talking to carriers in Australia and New Zealand about local distribution of its new IDEOS mobile phone, which runs the latest version of Google’s Android operating system.

The IDEOS comes in several models and runs Android 2.2, also known as Froyo. The handset features a 2.8″ QVGA, 320×240 capacitive touchscreen, a 3.2 megapixel camera with dual LED flash and will support 3G speeds of up to 7.2Mbps as well as 802.11n Wi-Fi. It also comes with GPS functionality for Google Maps navigation and supports SD cards of up to 16GB for additional storage.

“Huawei is currently in talks with Australian and New Zealand operators about local distribution,” the company said in a statement issued overnight.

The IDEOS will sell for between US$100 and US$200, although Huawei has not yet said what the phone will cost in Australia, nor what mobile telcos it is talking to regarding distribution.

On paper the IDEOS initially looked as though it might not support Telstra’s 850Mhz Next G network, as the device was listed as supporting the 900 and 2100MHz device bands, but a Huawei spokesperson later clarified there was a 850MHz version of the device.

Huawei also announced three additional Android-powered devices — its U8800, U8500 and U8300 models — however, it has not revealed plans to bring the handsets to the Australian market.

The news represents the first launch by Huawei of an Android handset in the Australian market, as well as a significant mobile phone push in general by the company, which has a strong handset presence in its home turf in China.

Up until this point Huawei has not focused on bringing its consumer line-up to Australia, preferring to work on larger deals for carrier network infrastructure behind the scenes.

It also comes as virtually every other handset manufacturer of note, apart from companies like Apple and Nokia which run their own operating systems on their phones, have recently started introducing waves of Android-based smartphones into the Australian market.

Even companies who have not traditionally focused on smartphones are getting into the game. Dell has been discussing its Streak mini-tablet with carriers, and Acer on Wednesday revealed plans to bring no less than five Android handsets to the local market.

Huawei debuts Android 2.2 IDEOS smartphone

Huawei has launched the IDEOS, or U8150, smartphone, which will cost between $100 and $200, depending on the market, the company said Thursday at the Internationale Funkaustellung (IFA) trade show in Berlin.

The price is what operators pay Huawei for the device, and it will be up to them to decide what they charge their subscribers, the company said.

Huawei is convinced that more affordable smartphones will help expand the market, and the IDEOS smartphone will also change what a product in this category should come with. It has a 2.8-inch touchscreen, a 3.2-megapixel camera and GPS.

Users will also be able to access the Internet using 802.11n, which is quickly becoming a more common network feature on high-end smartphones. The Qualcomm processor is clocked at 528 MHz, according to Huawei.

Android version 2.2 will allow users to turn the phone into a wireless hotspot. Users will connect to the smartphone with Wi-Fi and the device will then connect them to the Internet using the HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) 3G wireless at up to 7.2Mbit/sec.

The phone will start shipping in the next couple of weeks, and will become available in "a number of countries across Europe, Asia-Pacific, North America and Latin America", according to Huawei.

The company is also getting ready to ship the U8800, which is a more advanced smartphone model. The phone was first announced at Mobile World Congress in February, and it too comes with Android version 2.2. However, its standout feature is HSDPA at 14.4M bps. The phone will start shipping in October, and will become available in both Western Europe, North America and the Asia-Pacific region.

Going forward, the IDEOS name will be used on several other smartphones, as well, and a tablet isn't out of the question, Huawei said.

ViewSonic launching ViewPad7 the Android tablet come phone

ViewSonic are hoping to make an impression on the tablet market with their ViewPad 7 tablet computer which they will be showing off at the upcoming IFA in Berlin. Here are a few details they’ve released prior to the event.

The ViewPad 7 comes with a 7 inch capacitive touchscreen and will be running on Android Froyo but it’s more than just a tiny tablet, it’s a rather large phone too.

You will also find front and back facing cameras, and the tablet/phone will support 3G, Wi-Fi, GPS and Bluetooth. Also included is a microSD slot (up to 32GB storage) and USB.

There’s a full size SIM slot too to turn your tablet into a phone but thanks to Bluetooth, you won’t have to be seen in public holding the device up to your ear.

So essentially, you will be able to use your ViewPad 7 as you would any tablet to access the internet, send emails and enjoy apps from the Android application store, but you will also be able to make calls, and send text messages and that’s got to go down well.

Oh and there’s the ability for it to function as an eReader, something that all self respecting tablets need to have these days.

“We are proud to announce another world first at ViewSonic. 3G phone functionality combined with dual cameras gives the ability for use of Android apps to use augmented reality or video calling on the move with the benefit of an excellent 7-inch screen,” says Derek Wright, European product marketing manager for ViewSonic

“The ViewPad 7 is aimed at users who require the ‘always on’ connectivity they are used to from a mobile phone with a more agreeable screen size for longer term use.”

Price wise we’re not too sure but the rumour is that the ViewPad 7 will be available from next month and for £350 or less and that’s including VAT.

There’s also a rumour about a 10 inch version of the ViewPad but we don’t know anything about that yet, perhaps we’ll hear more at the IFA show. Will keep you posted.

Ok so the big question is will the ViewPad 7 be able to compete against Apple’s iPad?

Device vendors target China with 3G Androids

China’s homegrown 3G technology, TD-SCDMA, won a little more support this week as device vendors Motorola and Sony Ericsson got behind the platform with a raft of new devices catering to the country’s nascent data services market.

Motorola has introduced three Android-based touchscreen devices – the MT810 for China Mobile’s TD-SCDMA network, the XT806 for China Telecom’s CDMA2000 network, and the A1680 for China Unicom’s WCDMA network.

The three handsets bring Motorola’s portfolio of Android devices in China to eleven, all released in the past 12 months. The three new devices follow the lead of the Ming, which first launched in 2006 and established itself as a hit with its Chinese handwriting support. Since the launch of the series more than five million Ming devices have sold in China.

Rival vendor Sony Ericsson meanwhile is launching its own smartphone to support China Mobile’s TD-SCDMA network – the Sony Ericsson A8i. The phone features a 3.5” touch screen, wifi, and China Mobile’s mobile music service. It runs the OPhone platform, China Mobile’s customised version of Android.

In related news China Mobile has completed the country’s first 10G GPON full service test with local vendor Huawei as equipment partner. The company has verified 10G GPON’s support for services such as internet data, IMS-based voice, IPTV, E1 leased line, Ethernet leased line, video conferencing, and wifi backhaul.

Sierra Wireless first to support Telstra's dual-channel HSPA+ network with new USB modem and expanded wireless module lineup

Telstra Ultimate(TM) USB Modem by Sierra Wireless now available in Australia; new Sierra Wireless AirPrime(TM) HSPA+ embedded wireless modules introduced to support device manufacturers VANCOUVER, Aug. 30 /CNW/ - Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR; TSX: SW) today announced that it is supporting the launch of Telstra's first-in-the-world dual-channel HSPA+ network in Australia with some of the fastest modems the company has ever produced.

The Sierra Wireless AirCard(R) 312U wireless USB modem, first demonstrated at Mobile World Congress in February, is now commercially available in Australia, marketed as the Telstra Ultimate(TM) USB modem. With it, Australians working at client locations, at airports, or on their commute home can access the Internet and online applications at speeds typically reserved for office environments.

Dual-channel HSPA+ doubles the speeds of current HSPA+ networks from a peak downlink of 21 megabits per second (Mbps) to 42 Mbps, at the same time improving network efficiency and providing a better experience for customers with more consistent network performance. Customers using a Telstra Ultimate USB modem in enabled coverage areas will experience real-world download speeds up to 20 Mbps.

"The new speeds have the potential to increase how and where our small and large business customers work - boosting productivity in the process," said Mike Wright, Executive Director, Telstra Networks & Access Technologies. "Our customers have told us that they want higher speed mobile broadband so they can work more flexibly outside of the office and we are delighted to offer them these new speeds."

In addition to announcing the commercial launch of the AirCard 312U, Sierra Wireless has introduced the AirPrime MC8801, as well as the AirPrime MC8704 and MC8705 intelligent embedded modules for HSPA+ networks, to support manufacturers incorporating wireless connectivity into a variety of devices, including notebook, netbook, and tablet computers; connected consumer electronics products like personal navigation devices; and home or enterprise-class routers.

"Once again, Telstra is leading the world in rolling out the latest HSPA+ technology, and we're thrilled to be the first to provide customers in Australia with products that enable them to take full advantage of the network's capabilities," said Jin Pak, Vice President of Sales, Asia Pacific, for Sierra Wireless. "Being first with wireless USB modems benefits our embedded customers as well. Manufacturers looking to provide the capabilities of the new AirCard 312U inside their devices can be confident that Sierra Wireless embedded modules deliver a tested, reliable solution for the best possible performance."

The Sierra Wireless AirPrime MC8801 intelligent embedded module is designed to support HSPA+ Dual Channel networks and peak network downlink speeds of 42 Mbps. To provide a more cost-effective alternative for manufacturers that don't require the top speed, the new AirPrime MC8704 and MC8705 offer HSPA+ single channel support, with peak network downlink speed of 21 Mbps. The AirPrime MC8704 offers voice calling capability, while the MC8705 is targeted for data-centric devices that do not require voice support.

Samples of the AirPrime MC8801 and MC8705 are now available to customers for testing, with commercial shipments expected in the fourth quarter of this year. Samples of the AirPrime MC8704 are expected to be available early in 2011. With a substantial track record of working with network operators and manufacturing customers to integrate new wireless technologies quickly and reliably, Sierra Wireless offers the experience and expertise to simplify wireless integration and optimize time-to-market.

Telstra Launches Worlds Fastest Mobile Broadband Service

Australian Telco Telstra today launched what it calls “the world’s fastest national mobile broadband service,” boasting of real world download speeds up to 20Mbps.

Telstra, which already lays claim to the world’s fastest HSPA+ GSM Network – capable of up to 42Mbps down – has until today only sold a wireless modem capable of up to 21Mbps down.

With the launch of the “Telstra Ultimate USB” modem, Aussies can now take advantage of this new blistering speed across Australia’s capital city, CBDs and associated airports, selected metropolitan hubs and more than 100 regional centers.

Telstra business group managing director Deena Shiff said the high-speed zones “cover approximately 50% of the Australian population and match the areas of highest customer demand.”

Not everyone will be able to take advantage of it, however, with Ms Shiff adding “In other metropolitan and regional areas, the Telstra Ultimate USB Modem offers typical download speeds ranging from 550kbps up to 8Mbps, which is still significantly faster than Telstra’s mobile broadband competitors.”

The Telstra Ultimate USB is the world’s first commercial USB modem to use a new generation of mobile broadband technology called dual channel HSPA+.

The modem and enabling network technology was developed in collaboration with leading technology companies Ericsson, Qualcomm and Sierra Wireless.

Currently the modem is only available to enterprise customers with an initial inventory of 2000 devices. A more widespread launch to the rest of the unwashed masses is due later this year.

The Telstra Ultimate USB can also be purchased in conjunction with a range of mobile broadband plans including for the princely sum of $0 upfront with a $69 plan over 24 months (minimum total cost $1,656) or, from 5 October, outright for $299.

It is available from 25 August through Telstra Business and Telstra Enterprise & Government account managers.

iPhone, EVO 4G and others among the stars of the Summer of Smart Phones

If you follow tech headlines, you would swear this was the Summer of Smart Phones.

While many high-profile movies have gone bust at the box office this season, the smart-phone hits seem to keep coming, with a new, high-profile, do-it-all mobile device every few weeks. Apple's iPhone 4 got most of the headlines, but Sprint's EVO 4G phone got its share of attention, as have Verizon's Droid X and others. Smart phones are attractive to buyers because they do much more than send text messages or make phone calls - many of them can shoot high-definition video, browse the Web with full-featured browsers and run thousands of different apps (programs you can download to the phone wirelessly, many of them free).

If you feel left out of the technological loop, don't worry: The number of choices (not even counting all the calling and data plans) is daunting even to tech experts. But smart phones are clearly taking over: The Nielsen Co. estimates that smart phones will account for a third of phones by the end of this year and will overtake non-smart phones by the end of 2011.

In this chart, we cover some of the summer's most high-profile smart phones, but even newer phones keep coming. If you're considering buying, you'll also have Dell's Aero, the Droid 2 (a smaller version of the Droid X with a physical keyboard), Samsung's Epic 4G on Sprint and Captivate on AT&T, and others to choose from. (These phones were released too late for us to include in our chart, G3.)

The question I get asked most often as a tech writer about practically any smart phone is, "Is it better than the iPhone?" The iPhone 4 certainly has the most passionate fans and the most widespread appeal. About 3 million of them were sold in the first few weeks after it launched in late June. It's typically the phone I recommend to smart phone buyers if they're willing to commit to AT&T and to deal with some of the voice call issues the iPhone is plagued with.

If the iPhone 4 isn't for you, there are plenty of other choices, all with varying strengths and weaknesses. Turn to page G3 for a comparison of the iPhone 4 and several competitors, all released this summer.

ogallaga@statesman.com; 445-3672

Apple iPhone 4

Price (with two-year contract): $199 / $299 depending on memory storage size.
Manufacturer: Apple.

Screen size:3.5 inches.

Cameras: 5 megapixel rear camera with LED flash, can shoot HD video. VGA-quality front camera.

Data storage memory:16 GB or 32 GB, not expandable.

Current software version:Apple iOS 4.02.

Wireless network:AT&T 3G.

App availability: Apple's App Store, with more than 225,000 apps.

The pitch: Biggest hardware revision of the iPhone since it debuted in 2007. Faster hardware, thinner design, high-resolution ‘Retina Display' screen, ability to shoot and edit HD video on the phone, new ‘FaceTime' video chat feature.

Physical design: Two panes of strong glass held together in a slim, sturdy package by a steel band around the edges that also doubles as a wireless service antenna.

Best feature: The phone's display is gorgeous, but its ecosystem of more than 250,000 apps is the real show-stopper.

Worst feature or bug: The now-infamous ‘Antennagate' scandal — in which wireless service can deteriorate if you hold a finger over a small gap in the metal antenna — proved that an attractive hardware change can go horribly wrong. The phone still drops calls even with Apple's bumper-or-case antenna solution. And it won't play Flash-based videos or games, unlike some of the Android phones with recent software updates.

Our take:Despite sentimental commercials from Apple, we're not convinced FaceTime video chatting will be a feature that everyone will want to use (for one thing, it requires iPhone 4s and Wi-Fi service on both ends). Still, the iPhone 4 is the most well-rounded and full-featured of the smart phones we've seen so far. If you use your phone as a mobile Internet device more than for voice calls, it's nearly perfect. It has the most intuitive, easiest-to-use software and the widest range of downloadable apps. However, if you are a frequent voice caller and find the occasional dropped call unacceptable, you might find Apple's device too frustrating.

Do You Think BlackBerry is Still Dominating the Smartphone Game?

So if you have been a fan of BerryReporter.com as long as I have been apart of the site you might know that I live in Pennsylvania. You might not know, however that I live very close to the 2nd largest shopping malls in America, the King of Prussia Mall. The King of Prussia mall has 2,500,000 square feet of retail space, 410 retail stores and sees over a million guests each month.

Today I was taking a little trip to the King of Prussia mall for a nice afternoon out. Some of you might not know, but I am a very big people watcher and being the BlackBerry addict that I am the first thing that always catches my attention is what phone people are using. Now these days considering that a lot of people see BlackBerry lacking what other Smartphones like Android and Apple devices have to offer, I was thinking that I wouldn’t see as many BlackBerry devices as I am use to seeing. However I was very surprised!

I saw a lot of people carrying BlackBerry devices. There seemed to be a lot of younger people carrying BlackBerry devices. This is a pretty good sign for RIM. It means that the consumer market that RIM has been trying to advertise to are getting the message. I also saw a lot of the middle age crowd rocking BlackBerry devices. I noticed a lot of BlackBerry Curve 8530′s,Bold 9000′s Bold 9700′s, Curve 8330′s, some Storm 1′s and some Storm2′s. I even notice a couple people rocking the BlackBerry Torch 9800. I have recently been thinking that Android is making a very big push in the SmartPhone game, but the more times I am out in public, I see more and more people using BlackBerry devices instead of Android or iPhones.

We all know that BlackBerry’s are great email devices and help keep you connected to the office at all times. However for those who think that is all BlackBerry has to offer, I think you need to watch the people around you when you are out in public. I don’t think every person i saw today was rocking a BlackBerry just so they don’t miss any emails. Us BlackBerry addicts know that BlackBerry has tons of things to offer to anyone, such as BlackBerry Messenger, a great media player, tons of apps, great web browser, and you can make a phone call with it.

The Viewpad 7 is a 7-inch tablet that we’re assuming will run Android “Gingerbread” as Viewsonic hasn’t given much away yet. What we do know is that it will have 3G and WiFi connectivity and both front and back-facing cameras so users can shoot pictures more easily from any angle.

The 10 inch model will certainly grab attention. We suspect that if ViewSonic do go for a dual-booting ViewPad 10 that the Android portion will be provided for quick access to the internet and email while the Windows portion will be for more in depth things like Outlook usage, Word and Office in general.
