Kingston dives headfirst into water-cooling with HyperX H2O memory

Even in the niche world of PC overclocking, liquid-cooled memory never achieved popularity, but don't tell Kingston that -- the vendor's now selling premium sticks of DDR3 where water is a prerequisite.

Unlike OCZ's fin-tastic Flex series, the new Kingston Hyper H20 modules keep their cool via tube alone, which admittedly means more space in your case as you carefully bump their clocks up from the stock 2,000MHz (or 2,133MHz) and CL9-11-9-27 timings at 1.65 volts.

While you can't (yet) get them in a lovely shade of 2.4GHz blue, the modules do come in both dual-channel (4GB) and triple-channel (6GB) kits starting at $157 and $235 respectively, and we imagine if the above cooling design is marginally successful, you'll soon see it for sale on its own. PR after the break, memory available to purchase at our source link.

Q2 Numbers Are In, Smartphone Shipments Grow 64% Worldwide, Android 886%

Now that Q2 figures are in, analysts at Canalys have taken a deeper comprehensive look to compile figures related to smartphone sales worldwide.

In total, smartphone shipments increased 64% worldwide compared to Q2 2009, with the U.S smartphone market growing by 41% year over year. Most interesting was Android-specific numbers.

Device shipments sporting Android have increased an impressive 886% since Q2 2009, and in the U.S., Android represented 34% of the smartphones sold- an increase of 851%. Not surprising, the U.S. is the largest smartphone market in the world with 14.7M units sold during Q2 alone.

In terms of U.S. market share, RIM had 32.1% of smartphone sales in Q2, Apple had 21.7%, HTC had 14.4% and “others” accounted for 31.8%.

iPhone shipments grew 61% during the past year, slower than the 64% total segment growth, but enough to put it right behind RIM as the third best selling platform with 13% for the quarter.

Credit Cards To be Replaced By AT&T And Verizon Smartphones?

It seems like smartphones will have another use if AT&T and Verizon have anything to do with it. The two mobile carriers have teamed up and intend to bring smartphones to the market that will replace your credit card.

AT&T and Verizon are working together for a new payment method using smartphones they hope will rival credit cards like Visa and Mastercard.

It seems like T-Mobile may also be working with Verizon and AT&T on this new smartphone payment system. According to reports the payment system would run charges through the Discover network, which is currently the fourth largest out of all the credit card companies.

It will be interesting to see what these mobile carriers develop, and whether it will be good enough, and secure enough to rival traditional credit cards.

AT&T, Verizon And T-Mobile Look To Make Smartphones The New Credit Card

Mobile payments have experienced huge growth in recent years, more and more apps are equipped to help you make a transaction without the need to key in your credit card number. Whilst it has been easy to make virtual payments, in-store purchases via mobile devices has taken a little longer to gain traction but that might be about to change.

In a partnership between US mobile carriers AT&T and Verizon, which also includes T-Mobile USA, contactless technologies are being developed to transform modern day smartphones to incorporate their own methods of payment, with the view to directly compete with credit companies such as Visa and Mastercard.

The initiative will completely disregard technolgies offered by Visa and Mastercard, instead choosing to partner with Discover Financial Services to process payments and Barclays Ltd to handle the accounts. The carriers will look to test a system in stores in Atlanta and three other US cities, where customers will have the option of paying for their purchases using their smartphone.

MasterCard and Visa may be replaced by smartphones from AT&T and Verizon

In some countries, people have been able to pay for stuff using their smartphones for a while now.

When they go to vending machines or store counters in some countries all the buyer has to do is swipe their phone to pay.

Here in the US credit card payment systems using smartphones are not available.

AT&T and Verizon are looking to change that though. The wireless carriers are planning to work together to bring smartphones to market that can work as a credit card.

The two rival carriers are working together on a plan Bloomberg reports the carriers hope will rival MasterCard and Visa.

T-Mobile is also part of the scheme to replace credit cards with smartphones. The payment system would reportedly run charges through the Discover network. If the plan works Discover could move up from fourth place in the ranks of credit card company size.

LG Wink range targets teeny-bopper smartphone fans

LG has announced three new touchscreen smartphones, squarely aimed at younger users looking to ditch their basic handsets and get involved with the touchscreen revolution - albeit without breaking the bank.

The budget LG Wink range, which consists of the LG Wink itself, the LG Wink Style and the LG Wink 3G, have a heavy emphasis on music, texting and social media, all of the things that "Generation Z" are interested in - at least that's what LG hopes.

Not surprisingly the phones are pretty customisable with a choice of colour options and a raft of personalisation features within the devices.

The make-up of the phones' operations seems to be pretty consistent across the range with only minor cosmetic and hardware differences separating the three devices.

The LG Wink has a 2.4-inch touchscreen, with the Wink Style adding accents on the front buttons and an extra 0.4 inches of screen real estate. The Wink 3G adds, you guessed it, 3G connectivity for faster data transfers.

All of the phones have a virtual QWERTY keyboard, that works in both portrait and landscape modes, media playback via the microSD slot, FM radio and a "fun cartoon-styled user interface".

LG renames the Wink to Cookie aleady

The thing about Generation Z is that they are quick to change their minds. They are indecisive and they struggle to stick with any of their initial decisions.

And now it seems that LG, who only just announced to the world its new range of handsets aimed specifically at Generation Z, is being as indeterminate as its target audience.

For the LG Wink range will see no daylight over here in Blighty - the handsets will all adopt the Cookie moniker, as used by LG in the past, instead.

The LG Cookie, LG Cookie Style and LG Cookie 3G will all have the same specs as their Wink counterparts - they only differ in name.

So you're still looking at a "cartoon friendly" set of handsets that young 'uns should be able to afford by saving a few weeks pocket-money.

At Pocket-lint we have a theory as to why they've changed the name for the UK audience. Kids are a cruel bunch, and if an individual's trainers, clothes and now even mobile phones aren't seen to be the best around then that poor-sod could be in for some ridicule from his or her peers.

And it doesn't take a great mind to work out what the iPhone-carrying gang would quickly rename the LG Wink by changing the vowel to another vowel to pour scorn upon it, does it now?

Motorola Offers Up Droid X Source Code

Not long after we reported Samsung had released the source code for its Captivate handset, Motorola has muscled in on the action and mades its Droid X source code available, just a couple of weeks after its launch.

Whilst enterprising hackers have already rooted the Droid X, custom ROM’s are still a little way off from find their way to the device.

According to Phandroid, the code is missing a few segments that will prove useful to the ROM and

rooting Android fraternity so we might not expect to see too much from the release but you can never say never when Android developers are involved.
