Review: T-Mobile G2 – The evolution of the world’s first Android phone

The T-Mobile G2 is the official successor to the world’s first Android phone, the G1. While there have been countless phones released running the Android OS, the G2 is something of a milestone. We’re not talking about the capabilities of the phone itself, it’s just that the G2 shows where the OS has been in less than two years, and the G2 keeps the G1 alive going forward. While it looks like a solid successor, has the new HTC handset earned its name? Read on to find out!

The T-Mobile G2‘s hardware is a representation of HTC’s genius, mixing a svelte and sexy look with a touch of industrial design. The G2, if darker in color, could look like it belonged to the Verizon Droid family. In short, the G2 may be the successor to the G1, but I’d still consider it something like a Nexus One Pro.

Along the top of the phone, you’ll find the 3.5mm headphone jack along with the power button. The button is click-able enough, but is almost flush with the device, so it may not be very reassuring. Still, there was never a time that I had frustrations unlocking the device. On the right side, you’ll find a dedicated camera button and the switch to unlock the backplate. The only thing you’ll find on the bottom of the device is the microphone, as the charging port is found on the left side of the handset.

You can also find the volume rocker on the left side. The back of the G2 houses the 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, as well as the loud-speaker. From playing videos and listening to music, I can say that the loud-speaker is very nice, loud, and clear. The front of the handset sports the gorgeous 3.7 inch display, and the four soft buttons you’ll find on virtually any Android device, home, menu, back, and search.

T-Mobile myTouch announced: Android 2.2, video calling, and HSPA+

Looking a bit like a myTouch 3G Slide sans slide, the newly-announced myTouch -- yes, just "myTouch" -- is the latest addition to the consumer-centric side of T-Mobile's Android lineup, featuring a 3.8-inch WVGA display, 5 megapixel primary camera with 720p capture, and a next-gen MSM8255 Snapdragon core running at 1GHz. Notice how we said "primary camera"? Yep, it's true: the myTouch features a second, front-facing cam as well, becoming just the second phone from T-Mobile (and one of the first in the States, of course) to offer video calling. Looks like it'll be supported over both WiFi and 3G using Qik and Yahoo Messenger, so you'll be able to see the beautiful faces of your EVO-sporting friends from afar. Like the G2, it's got full support for T-Mobile's up-and-coming HSPA+ network along with 802.11n and Android 2.2 out of the box. We don't have pricing or a launch date yet, but we're told it'll be available "in time for the holidays" in your choice of four scintillating colors: white, black, plum, and red. Follow the break for the full press release.

Best Applications for T-Mobile G2

G2 is here and it comes with several necessary Android Apps pre-installed like Google Voice, Photobucket, Voice Actions, Wolfram Alpha, and all the Google apps. But, still there are so many other applications, which you would want to install on your new G2. So, we have compiled a list of must have Android applications for every G2 user. If you want to suggest an application, which needs to be added in the list, please feel free to drop a comment about it.

2. WeatherBug: WeatherBug is a free, ad-supported weather app providing users access to the largest network of professional weather stations. Get current conditions, forecasts, maps, severe weather alerts and much more!

3. Facebook for Androidg2 apps

4. Twitter for Android/Twidryod

5. Pandora Radio: Pandora Android app lets you listen to personalized radio stations based on your favorite artists or songs. Thanks to Android’s multitasking capabilities, you’ll be able to rock out while running other apps.

6. doubleTwist Player: The doubleTwist Player is a fully featured music and video app that seamlessly integrates with the free doubleTwist desktop client on Mac/PC. Import your iTunes playlists, ratings and playcounts; sync and play your audio and video podcasts and more!

It augments digital objects on top of reality, as can be seen through the mobile phone?s camera. When opening the app, you?ll be immediately presented with a list of spots nearby.

11. Wikidroid for Wikipedia: View all of Wikipedia’s articles formatted perfectly for your device.

12. 13. Kindle for Android/ NOOK for Android

13. Shopper: Shopper recognizes books and media by cover art, plus barcode scanning and voice search. Find local and online prices, reviews, specs, and more. Star your favorites and share with friends.

14. Google Goggles: Google Goggles is a visual search app. Instead of using words, take a picture of an object with your camera phone: we attempt to recognize the object, and return relevant search results. Goggles can also recognize English, French, Italian, German and Spanish words and allow you to translate to other languages.

15. Adobe Reader: The free app lets you view, zoom and perform other basic interactions with PDF and other documents, directly on your phone.
16. LauncherPro: it transforms your Android home screen into something more customized to your needs. The popular app released a series of updates these past few weeks.

17. Google Finance: The free app gives you mobile access to your Google Finance portfolios, letting you keep up with the companies you are watching and those in which you have invested. With concern around Google’s limited app regulation for third parties, using a Google-run app may ease your mind.

18. Photoshop Mobile: Photoshop in the mobile version does not have as many features, but those that are useful to do a little tweaks with mobile images. It costs nothing and you can upload your photos on Photoshop.com if you want. The app allows you to crop the photo, change the exposure, contrast, color
and add different filters.

That’s more than enough for a start.

T-Mobile G2 gets an early unboxing

T-Mobile's official street date for the G2 is Wednesday next week, but we knew some pre-orderers would be getting the phone early, and it looks like we've already got an unboxing to show for it. Rugged, free-spirited tipster Silverwolfe did the honors, and even managed to size the phone up against the original G2 while he was at it. Check out a few shots below, or hit up the source link for the full gallery.

T-Mobile G2 Pre-Orders Start Today

T-Mobile is beginning to open up pre-orders today for the new T-Mobile G2. The website below shows a pre-order date of September 24 through October 4 followed by a release date of October 6.

This is good news for two reasons. First reason is that it is now available to pre-order, which will certainly keep some people happier. The second reason is that the release date was thought to be October 16 which has now been announced as 10 days earlier.

The pre-orders look to be exclusive to current T-Mobile customers at this point with no indication of when they will be opened up to new customers.

The device its self is an Android 2.2 phone that runs an 800MHz Qualcomm MSM 7230 CPU. It has 4GB of ROM and 512MB RAM. The screen measures 3.7 inches and is in a WVGA format showing 480 x 800 pixels. The screen is capacitive touch.

T-Mobile G2 Pre-orders Now Available for Existing Customers

The moment is near: If you want a phone that echoes the glory of the first Android smartphone ever, the T-Mobile G1, you can now pre-order the T-Mobile G2 and receive it by October 6.

This offer is available only to existing T-Mobile customers, who will be getting their G2 early only if they order it before October 4.

The cost of the device is $250 before a $50 mail-in rebate with the standard two-year contract. Remember, though, the G2 will also be available in Best Buy stores on October 6 for $199 after a $50 instant rebate and a two-year contract. We guess the question you have to ask yourself is: Do you feel like parting (at least for a while) with an extra 50 bucks to get this phone a couple of days earlier?

T-Mobile G2 will be based on Android (Android) 2.2 and it will support HSPA+, the first T-Mobile to do so. It also has a full QWERTY keyboard, a 3.7-inch screen, an 800 MHz Snapdragon CPU, and a 5-megapixel camera with a LED flash and autofocus, capable of recording HD (720p) videos.

T-Mobile G2 goes up for pre-order

T-Mobile USA customers hoping to retire their beloved G1 and pick up the carrier’s latest Android smartphone can finally flex their credit cards today, with the news that – as expected – the T-Mobile G2 has gone up for pre-order. Priced at $199.99 (after a $50 mail-in rebate and assuming a new two-year agreement, of course) and currently only available to existing subscribers, the G2 is expected to drop into customer’s hands by October 6th

Coincidentally – or not – that’s also the same day that the Android smartphone will go up for sale generally. We’re hearing that T-Mobile is actually targeting the end of September for their initial deliveries – though you’ll have to get your pre-order in fast – so in fact you might have a week of earlier access than your non-subscriber friends.

Of course, you could also wait until the G2 lands at Best Buy, which won’t get you the smartphone early but should save you the hassle of sending off a mail-in rebate. Wherever you buy it from, the G2 runs Android 2.2 on Qualcomm’s new 800MHz Snapdragon processor, has a 5-megapixel camera, WiFi and GPS, along with HSPA+ connectivity and a QWERTY keyboard.

As you already know, the official launch of the device is expected starting October 6. As it goes without saying, this is only for existing T-Mobile customers. If you are not, you can check out our earlier article about Best Buy having already opened up their stores for G2 pre-orders.

T-Mobile G2 is an Android 2.2 device that comes with a 3.7-inches S-TFT WVGA display and has a unique hinge-style slider form factor. The phone is powered by a 800MHz Snapdragon processor and will be equipped with a 4GB internal memory, 8GB microSD card, 5-megapixel camera and 720p HD video recording capability.

T-Mobile G2 outed as HTC Desire Z?

It was only a couple of weeks ago when we first met the T-Mobile G2 through it’s Internet teaser page, and official images of the handset have now appeared on T-Mobile’s servers.

Specifications have also leaked alongside the images, which spies at Cellphonesignal claim confirms that the handset is likely to be known as the HTC Desire Z in the UK, a mobile which fell victim to separate leaks earlier this month.

A QWERTY version of the HTC Desire is expected to be announced at the end of the month, and it seems like this could be it. The HTC Desire Z hid under the code-name of HTC vision a while back, featuring specifications which sound very similar to those which feature on this handset – basically those of a HTC Desire with a slider keypad.

The handset will feature a 3.7 inch AMOLED screen, Android 2.2 running system, 1GHz SnapDragon processor, slider QWERTY keyboard, 5MP camera and 3G HSPA+. These specifications indicate that this will be the first T-Mobile handset to feature HSPA+, which T-Mobile refer to as having 4G speeds. It is also rumoured that the handset will only be available in silver, but we sort of hope this part isn’t true.

The G2/Desire Z is expected to be released later this year, although this is yet to be confirmed. With a HTC Event planned in London on September 15th, hopefully we won’t have to wait long to find out. We’ll keep you updated!
