HTC Desire HD

Perhaps it is better to think of the Desire HD as an Android version of the HTC HD2, rather than a replacement for the original Desire. Why? Well, the Desire HD is 21% heavier and 16% bigger than the original "iPhone sized" Desire, so it's likely that we will see the Desire around for some time to come.

The 4.3" display is an 800 x 480 pixel capacitive touchscreen panel, although we're not sure at the moment if this is an OLED or SuperLCD unit. Inside is a optimized 1GHz processor coupled with an impressive 768MB of RAM and 1.5GB of Flash storage, and of course Flash can be expanded through the microSD slot.

On the back is an 8 megapixel camera with autofocus and dual LED flash, capable of taking 720p HD video. Inside is a large 1230mAh battery that is quoted as giving 5 hours talktime and 20 days standby time on 3G.

Of course, the HTC Desire HD also has GPS and Google Maps Navigation. The large screen should make it an excellent in-car navigation device, although HTC have gone further with what appears to be their own built-in mapping and navigation software too.

The construction is an elegant aluminium unibody design which is both light and strong at the same time.. but it does really just look like a big black slab, as did the HD2.

This is a 3.5G device apparently supporting HSPA+ giving maximum download speeds of up to 14 Mbps. The Desire HD also supports WiFi including "N" networks, plus all the usual connectivity features such as Bluetooth 2.1 and USB.

This is an Android 2.2 device, so it has access to the full set of Google applications and many thousands more through the HTC Desire HD Android Market. HTC have also updated their Sense interface which is now integrated with a new service called HTCSense.com which synchronises contacts and messages and also has some cool features to enable you to find your phone if you have lost it.

The HTC Desire HD should be available in certain European and Asian markets from October, although no guidance was given on price. Our best bet is that this very high-end device is likely to cost more than €600 or £500 at retailers.

ASUS Unveils New Notebooks and PCs at Pepcom

As the title might suggest to you, PEPCOM is happening tonight. And, while it’s one way to get people to meet and greet, it’s primarily just another avenue for companies to show off and announce new pieces of technology. ASUS is taking full advantage of it, and they’ve just gone and announced a plethora of new toys that people would want to get their hands on. The main draw is notebooks, but there’s one PC in there worth mentioning.

First up is the ASUS NX90Jq. The manufacturing company is saying that this notebook is the result of cutting-edge technology and craftmanship. The notebook features a polished aluminum body, and there are two speakers that feature Bang & Olufsen ICEpower technology, making sure that your music and movies get the sound they deserve. The display? Coming in at a whopping 18.4-inches, and there are two trackpads, along with the full keyboard. And, there’s Asus’ Rotation Desktop software, which lets you work with the User Interface like an intuitive DJ-like experience.

And then on the smaller scale, we have the ASUS U33Jc 13.3-inch notebook. These are the notebooks that feature the bamboo top case. Inside, you’ll find Intel’s Core i3 processor (which you can choose to use Intel’s Core i5 processor, if you want), and you’ll also get to take advantage of Intel’s Wireless Display (WiDi) technology for wirelessly streaming media.

The N53Jf packs the next-generation NVIDIA GeForce GT425M graphics, as well as Intel’s Core i5 processor inside. The company has also put in their new audio technology, SonicMaster. It’s designed to bring professional surround sound to your notebook. You also get NVIDIA’s Optimus auto-switching technology, and USB 3.0 ports. And just in case you have moments where you need a bit more computing power, you can take advantage of Intel’s Turbo Boost technoogy.

BlackBerry Curve 3G 9330 Announced by Sprint

Not to be out-done by Verizon, Sprint has announced that they will be offering the BlackBerry Curve 3G 9330 in gray and purple starting September 26 for $49.99 on a two-year contract after mail-in rebate. Most sales channels should have it from October 10 onwards. Sprint confirms BlackBerry 6 upgradeability on the Curve 3G, but not until 2011.

The 9330 differs only slightly from the GSM 9300 that was announced on T-Mobile a few weeks ago. It ditches Wi-Fi n support, but has 512 MB of application memory in its place, which is actually a great trade-off. 802.11 n never did anything spectacular for me. Everything else is pretty much the same, like the 320 x 240 display, 2 megapixel fixed-focus camera without flash, Wi-Fi, GPS, and 3G. It’s a nice, stable, entry-level smartphone that stays affordable by skipping the fancy stuff. The hardware feels great, with rubberized siding, convenience keys that melt seamlessly into the phone, and a solid construction. Considering the added memory and compatibility with RIM’s new operating system with universal search and UI overhaul, the Curve 3G will warrant a look from those who had passed on the 8530 predecessor.

Head over to Sprint’s online store for updates on the device, or take a looksee at our review of the BlackBerry Curve 3G 9300 to get a sense of what the 9330 is all about.

Confirmed: Galaxy Tab, Blackberry Torch, And Samsung Focus Coming To AT&T

Well it was a rumor, but now it looks like we have confirmation: the Galaxy Tab, Blackberry Torch, and Samsung Focus will be coming to AT&T before the end of the year. There’s even on confirmation on the Samsung Cetus. The Cetus is poised to be AT&Ts first Windows 7 phone.

AT&T is really working on their offerings before the end of the year, including no less then 3 other Windows 7 Phones. Assuming Engadget has it right, we should see the Blackberry Torch as well, coming in white, olive, and a red & black color scheme. There’s also confirmation that that Tab will be coming to AT&T, which was previously just a rumor. If you’re an HTC fan, the Surround will also be arriving before the holiday season. Expect a major announcement from Samsung confirming all the carriers on their new phones on the 16th.

HTC officially announce Desire Z and Desire HD

HTC’s 2010 London conference may have just kicked off, but 2 new handsets have already been unveiled: the HTC Desire Z (T-Mobile G2) and my personal favourite, the HTC Desire HD.

The HTC Desire Z has has been announced as we expected, as the UK’s version of the T-Mobile G2. The handset brings with it all the features we had hoped for, including: Android 2.2 OS, an 800MHz Qualcomm 7230 processor, a 3.7 inch QVGA touchscreen, full QWERTY keypad and 5MP camera complete with autofocus and flash. We can also expect 4GB of internal memory, alongside a microSD slot for expansion. HTC have also announced that the handset will launch on Vodafone in October.

The HTC Desire HD may have been one of HTC’s worst kept secrets but it certainly seems the most impressive of their announcements, with the company claiming “It’s the best of what we have done packaged into one handset’. The new smartphone is set to feature a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, Android 2.2 OS and a massive 4.3 inch QVGA touchscreen. We can also expect an impressive 8MP camera complete with dual LED flash, HD video recorder and microSD slot to expand its 4G of internal memory. The handset proves the perfect upgrade from the HTC Desire, with its improved camera, larger screen and bags of new features. The HTC Desire HD is also set to launch on Vodafone next month.

Alongside the unveiling of 2 new handsets, HTC have also announced they will be launching HTC Sense 2.0, an update to their customized user interface for devices powered by Android. The upgrade to Sense brings with it a wealth to new features of HTC smartphones. These will include: Quick Start, improved FriendStream, Helicopter view in the web browser, Flash 10.1 support and Maps Cache, for use of the service offline. The update will also bring with it an online portal, which users can access to ring your phone if lost, remotely wipe your handset and even post a message to your own phone is misplaced. Very cool. This service will be available on both the HTC Desire Z and the Desire HD.

Nokia C6-01 first hands-on

So the C7 might be the sexiest Symbian^3 device... but the C6-01, well, it just may be the cutest. Just all depends on what you're looking for (and how much you're willing to spend), you know? Like the C7, we had a little difficulty getting screen swipes to register while trying to change home screens, but considering that the top of the bezel had the very prototypish "C0" mystery name badge,

we're more than happy to cut it a little slack. Having come directly from the C7, it's a little tricky to be comfortable with the smaller display -- not to mention the thicker body -- and the back definitely tends toward the cheap side with matte hard plastic, but again, this is clearly designed to be a budget device. And hey, how many budget smartphones can you think of with AMOLED displays that have extreme black levels? Check out the gallery for a few shots.
