Nokia C5-03 Symbian^1 budget touchscreen phone debuts

Lest you thought Nokia had turned an entirely new leaf and shifted over to capacitive touchscreens for its finger-friendly handsets, the new Nokia C5-03 ruins that reputation by using a 3.2-inch 640 x 360 resistive panel. Still, that’s because this budget device is altogether more modest in its ambitions: it runs Symbian^1 (i.e. S60 5th Edition) and has a 5-megapixel camera.

You also don’t get the five-band HSPA of the N8 and C7, with the C5-03 having quadband GSM/EDGE and triband WCDMA (900/1900/2100). There’s also WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, A-GPS and a microUSB port, an FM radio (but no FM transmitter) and a microSD slot okay with up to 16GB cards.

There’s Ovi Mail, Ovi Maps and Ovi Store access, of course, and decent battery life too: up to 11.5hrs talktime or 25 days standby. Whether that – and the estimated €170 pre-tax and pre-subsidy price tag – will leave it sufficiently compelling is something we’ll have to wait and see about when it launches globally at the end of the year.

Nokia C5-03 Symbian^1 Touchscreen Phone Launched

Nokia has announced Symbian^1 (S60 5th Edition) running touchscreen smartphone Nokia C5-03 for the budget conscious folks. New Nokia C5-03 sports a 3.2-inch resistive touchscreen display that is good enough to enjoy multimedia and browse the mobile web. Do not confuse Nokia C5-03 with the mid-range Nokia C5 that was launched back in July.

The phone's 3.2-inch resistive LCD touchscreen display supports 360x240 pixel resolution and has 24-bit color depth. This means that the content and multimedia would look decent but the resistive touchscreen might bug you a bit. You'll be able to type in text with full screen QWERTY keyboard and the phone will also support handwriting recognition.

Shutterbugs can enjoy the 5 megapixel camera that offers 4x digital zoom and has f/2.4 aperture. You can also record video in 640x480 resolution at 15 frames per second in H.263 or MPEG-4 formats. Yes, the only thing missing here is a flash.

Under the hood lies 600MHz ARM11 microarchitecture based processor with 128MB SDRAM and 256MB ROM memory. Together, all three are good enough to run the Symbian^1 (S60 5th Edition) operating system smoothly. However, users will get a mere 40MB onboard memory storage but a 2GB microSD card will be bundled with the phone. Plus, you can add up to 16GB microSD card via expansion slot.

Nokia C5-03 will support quadband GSM/EDGE and triband WCDMA networks. Along with that, the phone will also have HSDPA Cat9 offering up to 10.2Mbps download speed and HSUPA Cat5 offering up 2.0 Mbps upload speeds. Nokia has also added Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g for connecting it over WLAN. Bluetooth 2.0+EDR will enable file transfers from your Nokia C5-03 to other compatible handset or computer.

Music aficionados can enjoy their favorite music as well as videos in different audio and video formals by connecting headphones through the 3.5 mm audio port. This phone will have Stereo FM Radio.

One can find latest free version of Ovi Maps hands-free navigation that can be used with the digital compass and location services will be supported by the built-in Assisted-GPS (A-GPS) feature. Nokia has also added Ovi Mail and Ovi Store access for users.

Packing a 1000 mAh battery, Nokia C5-03 promises a talk time of up 11.5hours on GSM networks, which is outstanding for a touchscreen phone in the mid-range segment. If you love watching videos then this phone will play your favorite videos for up to 7.5 hours and music for up to 35 hours, which is as much as the Apple iPod touch. Nokia will offer the C5-03 in Graphite Black, Lime Green, Petrol Blue and Aluminum Grey colors.

The new Nokia C5-03 will be launched worldwide by the end of this year for 170 EUROs (Rs. 10,570 approx.) excluding tax. Now, if it arrives in India for about Rs. 12,500 then it might compete with the Nokia C6 (NOT C6-01, mind it!).

South Korean electronics giant LG added one more feather to its cap by introducing the world’s largest commercial 3D LED backlit TV- the 72LEX9.

As the model number suggests, the new HDTV measures 72 inches, and features full LED backlight, DLNA support, a 480Hz TruMotion panel, and 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio.

The 72LEX9 contains four HDMI ports along with one USB with YouTube and Google Picasa support. It will require users to wear Stereoscopic 3D glasses, but the Seoul-based company has made no comments on whether the
3D glasses will come with the TV.

HTC sees 63% growth in smartphone shipments, says iSuppli

Analysts at iSuppli have claimed HTC took eight per cent of the global smartphone market in the second quarter.
HTC made major gains in the smartphone sector in the second quarter of the year.

Newly-released figures from iSuppli revealed the manufacturer saw its global high-end handset shipments increase by 63.1 per cent when compared to the first three months of 2010.

Between April and June, HTC shipped 4.9 million smartphones, taking its market share for the period to eight per cent.

This meant the company consolidated its fourth place position in the global manufacturer rankings, behind only Nokia, Research In Motion and Apple.

Senior analyst for wireless communications at iSuppli Tina Teng attributed HTC's success to its use of the Android operating system (OS), which can be found on handsets such as the HTC Desire and HTC Legend.

"Android is the secret sauce for smartphone growth for many companies in 2010," Ms Teng remarked.

Despite its support for Android, HTC has this week launched a number of new smartphones - including the HTC 7 Mozart on Orange - that will run the Windows Phone 7 OS.

T-Mobile busts out new prepaid plans with data options, mix-and-match voice and text

Come October 18, T-Mobile USA will be shaking things up in the prepaid market with a handful of new options that finally acknowledge users -- yes, even those on prepaid plans -- are gobbling data in droves. Unlimited voice and text with 2GB of data will run $70 a month; the same plan with just 100MB of data will run $50, and for $30, you'll be able to get a pretty interesting concept that includes any combination of 1,500 minutes and text messages plus 30MB of data. For $1.49 per day, you'll be able to sign up for a Web DayPass, which gives you unlimited browsing capability on any data-capable phone; T-Mobile tells us BES isn't currently supported, but that shouldn't be an issue for most.

If straight-up data is more your thing, you'll want to check out the T-Mobile Jet (pictured), T-Mobile's first dedicated prepaid data stick. The new modem commemorates the launch of a handful of prepaid data options, including $10 for a weekly allowance of 100MB, $30 for 300MB monthly, and $50 for 1GB monthly. We'd hoped that T-Mobile would resist the urge to cap data and follow through with the bandwidth throttling option instead, but then again, we suppose things work a little differently in the prepaid market. Look for the Jet to hit retail online on the 18th of this month, followed by in-store availability on the 20th. Follow the break for the full press release.

ADATA's S007 military spec USB flash drive is designed for the battlefield

It doesn't boast the eSATA / USB 3.0 capabilities of the N909, but ADATA's new S007 is easily the tougher of the two. Designed to be fully compliant with US MIL-SPEC standards, this new USB key is available in capacities up to 32GB and should provide careless handlers with "unrivaled digital data protection from both impacts and electric shocks." Both of 'em (it's available in green and red) are wrapped in a rubber coating, and transfer at USB 2.0 speeds (upwards of 30MB/sec on the read side and 8MB/sec on the write side), but sadly, there's no mention of a price or release date.

Cafepress teams with TomTom to slather your GPS in color

Has Colorware started a revolution that's now impossible to stop? Here's hoping the answer is contrary to the obvious. TomTom has -- for reasons unknown -- decided it best to give consumers the option of coating their future navigator in... well, whatever they want. We aren't generally ones to gripe about choices, but the demonstration photo here definitely caters to those in favor of all things vivacious. The outfit has teamed with Cafepress in order to make the magic happen on "select models," and amazingly, privilege of destroying any and all resale value will cost you absolutely nothing. Talk about an incentive to buy.

Nokia N900 will soon give users the option to dual-boot into MeeGo

Whatever else you might say about Nokia, the company knows how to keep a promise. Back in March, we were told there'd be a dual-boot solution for the N900, providing users of the Maemo 5 phone with a taste of the MeeGo life, and, even though it might have taken a while, that firmware is now on the precipice of becoming available. Mind you, there's quite a distance between offering users the option and supporting the dual-boot experience (which Nokia isn't doing), but given the choice between some MeeGo and complete NoGo, we know what we'd prefer. Hit the source to get fully educated while waiting on the dual-booting PR 1.3 update to drop.
