Samsung unveils WiFi-enabled ST80 camera

Camera releases are somewhat a by-the-numbers thing with so many different variations being released by numerous companies throughout the year. Samsung's pair here does have some interesting standout features, but one at a time.

The 14.2 megapixel ST80 point-and-shoot boasts WiFi capabilities for email / direct upload of images (DLNA supported, to boot). It's also got 3x optical zoom, a 3-inch WQVGA touchscreen, 720p 30fps H.264 video recording, and Sammy's "Smart Crop" feature for taking angled shots and "straightening them up" (i.e. a banner that is fixed to look straight on).

This one's due out September 2010 for a penny under $250. Then there's the HMX-E10 pocket camcorder with an impressive 270-degree swiveling lens and 1920 x 1080 30p H.264 HD video recording.

That touchscreen you see is a 2.7-inch LCD, the lens has 2x digital zoom, connectivity is HDMI and USB (also used for charging), and release details are September as well, for $199.99.

PS3 and Bravia sales boost quarterly Sony profits

Earlier this summer, Sony closed another fiscal year of being in the red, but it's starting the 2010/11 ledger with its quill dipped firmly in the black inkwell.

For the quarter ending June 30, the Japanese megacorp clocked up ¥25.7 billion ($293 million) in pure, unadulterated profit off the back of a ¥67 billion operating income.

When you compare that to the performance this time last year, a ¥37 billion loss, you have to agree that the Stringer purse-tightening program seems to have delivered the desired effect.

The primary drivers for the current resurgence are pinpointed as the PlayStation 3 and Bravia lines (frankly, we consider the two utterly inseparable), and Sony's feeling so buoyant about it all that it's revising its projection for the coming year's revenues upwards today.

The good news is tempered, however, by the threat of a rising Yen, which has already claimed Nintendo's profits as its first victim.

Samsung Intensity II u460 now available at Verizon

Verizon’s Samsung Intensity now officially has a successor: none other than the recently-seen Samsung Intensity II u460.

Aavailable online as of today (and coming to Verizon’s sores in the next few weeks), the Samsung Intensity II is – like the first Intensity – a phone with an alphanumeric keypad and a sliding QWERTY keyboard, so it should be a hit among heavy texters.

The new handset features a 2.2 inch QVGA display, a youthful UI, VZ Navigator, Social Beat app (providing access to Facebook, Twitter and MySpace), Microsoft Bing search, Bluetooth, Music player, voice commands, eco-calculator, 1.3MP camera “with night vision”, and MicroSD card support (up to 32GB).

The Intensity II’s battery cover is 35% made out of recycled plastic mainly “extracted from water bottles”. Its charger is a high-efficiency one, while the packaging is “partially made from recycled paper and partially printed with soy ink.”

The new model also has an eco-friendly slant. It's partly made from recycled plastic, with its battery cover extracted from 35 percent post-consumer materials.

In addition, the packaging is partially made from recycled paper and partially printed with soy ink.

Inside, an eco-calculator can track your car's fuel mileage, calculate the auto's efficiency, and estimate the amount of carbon dioxide your ride gives off.

Motorola beats the street

Shaumberg, Illinois electronics company Motorola Inc. on Thursday posted its earnings for the second quarter of 2010. The company's total revenue was $5.41 billion, which beat Wall Street's estimates of $5.19 billion, but was still down against last year's $5.49 billion. The company reported a strong flow of cash for the quarter, with overall earnings of $162 million, up sharply from last year's $26 million. Total sales, however, were down some $83 million against the same quarter last year.

Of Motorola's four divisions: Mobile Devices, Home, Enterprise Mobility Solutions, and Networks, the latter two divisions were the main drivers of profit for the company.

During the quarter, Motorola's Enterprise Mobility solutions scored several noteworthy government contracts, including one to build the first 700MHz LTE public safety network for the San Francisco Bay area, and several Project 25 contracts (interoperable digital two-way radio for first responders) in Georgia, Maryland, New York and Washington. The group also announced the ES400, a dual-mode GSM/CDMA Enterprise Digital Assistant touted as the smallest in its class.

Samsung Confirms Release of Android Powered Tablet This Quarter

While Microsoft has proved unable to give a definitive date for any tablets bearing its software to appear, Google’s partners are having no such trouble as Samsung has confirmed that it will introduce a 7in tablet running Android this quarter.

Following a picture leaked by Samsung South Africa, some have already dubbed it the Samsung Galaxy Tablet, continuing a brand name that Samsung introduced with the Galaxy, Galaxy S, and forthcoming Galaxy Q.

The move demonstrates there will be a wide choice of tablets and OSs to choose from come the end of the year. Samsung and LG are producing tablets powered by Android, HP is going with both WebOS and Windows 7, while Acer, Dell, and Toshiba are also likely to take the Microsoft route.

If you haven’t yet succumbed to an iPad, the news means that it may well prove sensible to hold off for now.

LG: We Have “A Couple” Of Windows Phone 7 Phones Coming This Year

Microsoft already announced that LG was among the hardware partners that would be producing the first wave of Windows Phone 7 devices. Now, LG has also commented on that situation, saying that they’re planning to have “a couple” out before the year’s end. Nice.

Remember that LG suffered a poor recent Q2 2010, mainly led by their underperforming mobile phone and HDTV businesses.

In addition to Windows Phone 7, LG has recently recommitted their plans for Android, saying that they plan to introduce 20 Android phones to the market before the end of the year.

Regarding their underperforming phone business, PC World says that LG’s mobile phone sales were down 80% from the same quarter last year. LG said that their featurephones did well, especially in developing countries.

Their smartphones, including the poorly-reviewed LG Ally, did not sell so well. Hopefully, their ton of Android offerings and scant Windows Phone 7 offerings will have some gems for the Korean tech giant.

Sprint HTC EVO 4G helps carrier add 111K customers in Q2

Thanks in large part to the success of the Android-powered HTC EVO 4G superphone, Sprint was able to add 111,000 net customers for the second quarter of 2010.

This could be considered a tipping point for the third-largest carrier because this is the first net addition of subscribers in three years!

Sprint has been bleeding subscribers over the last few years for a few reasons. First and foremost is the Apple iPhone on AT&T, as many customers fled Sprint to use Apple’s smartphone.

The carrier tried to rely on devices like the Palm Pre to hold on to customers but that was a clear failure. The Sprint HTC EVO 4G helped change all that.

The HTC EVO 4G may help turn the tide, as the Android superphone could credibly be called the best, or one of the best smartphones on the market.

The EVO 4G has been delighting users for a few months now and it can still be difficult to find in stores. The big-screened smartphone might not have been responsible for single-handedly giving Sprint net subscriber growth for Q2, but it certainly did its part.

Still, It’s not all roses for Sprint, as the company reported a loss of $760 million for the quarter and its net subscriber addition this quarter came from a growth in the prepaid market from Sprint subsidiaries like Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile.

The company lost 228,000 contract customers in the second quarter and this now gives Sprint 48.2 million total subscribers. There’s no doubt the EVO helped keep those contract subscriber losses to a minimum.

HTC EVO 4G: A good business on financial plan for Sprint

The new HTC EVO 4G is a good business for Sprint. Seems like the sales for HTC EVO 4G are what company has expected.

Sprint can say thank you to the smartphone HTC EVO 4G that boosts its quarterly results and allows him to record a gain of new customers for the first time in three years.

By starting a network from 2008 WiMAX, the U.S. operator Sprint wanted to take over competitors with the HTC EVO 4G and attempt to stem the decline in the number of its customers.

The bet is more risky than most large operators rely on other technology proto-4G, LTE (Long Term Evolution), but only now is its first non-commercial.

Having made heavy investments (which will last for several years and also HTC EVO 4G) to establish a network of national stature, they lacked the advantage that of encouraging more capable customers to come back to him.

And this joker could be the smartphone HTC EVO 4G was launched in early June with very good initial results and now experiencing shortages.

Froyo for Samsung Galaxy S leaked

Samsung’s Galaxy S isn’t due for an upgrade to Froyo until September, but the pre-release builds have already begun to leak onto the ‘net.

Now, this isn’t the final build, so don’t expect this to be bug-free, but if you like to live dangerously, then you can get it here.Usual disclaimer applies: it aint my fault if you brick your device. Not much else to say, really.

Wait! There is! Don’t, whatever you do, try and install this on a non-standard (eg any of the US variants) Galaxy S phone. The universe may explode. No joke reality.

LG profits down thanks to its lame smartphones

LG Electronics saw its profits tumble for the second quarter thanks to poor performances by its TV and handset divisions. It looks like smartphones like the LG Ally just aren’t going to cut it in a market filled with Android superphones the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S, Motorola Droid X, HTC EVO 4G and the Apple iPhone 4.

It was by no means an awful quarter, as the company reported a net profit of about $106.6 million but that was a drop of about 33% from the same period last year. For today, though, we’ll focus just on LG’s mobile division as we’re not IntoTVs or IntoLCDs.

The company is still the third-largest phone maker in the world behind Nokia and Samsung, as it shipped 30.6 million million phones for the quarter. But it’s increasingly becoming a smartphone world and LG is nowhere to be found in the high-end category dominated by Apple, HTC and Samsung. Do you really think the LG Ally belongs in our Superphone Shootout? Yeah, me neither.

OLED Shortage Forces HTC to Switch Displays

Smartphone maker HTC is switching back to older LCD technology for some of its smartphones because of a shortage of active-matrix OLED displays.

The new crop of HTC phones coming this summer will include a technology called SLCD, or Super LCD, instead of the newer organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays used in several current-model smartphones, including the HTC Desire and the Google-designed, HTC-built Nexus One.

HTC says SLCD will give consumers a visual experience comparable to HTC’s current 3.7-inch OLED displays. SLCDs will also offer better battery performance, contrast and more-natural balanced color than AMOLED (Active-Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode) displays, says the company.

“HTC is experiencing high demand for many of our phones, specifically our phones with 3.7-inch displays,” Peter Chou, CEO of HTC said in a press release. “The new SLCD display technology enables us to ramp up our production capabilities quickly to meet the high demand.”

But just what exactly is Super LCD technology? Two analysts Wired.com spoke with say it may just be a marketing jargon for a variant of the traditional thin-film transistor liquid-crystal display (TFT-LCD) that powers almost all mobile displays currently on the market.

“There’s Super AMOLED, Super IPS and now Super LCD,” says Raymond Soneira, president of research and consulting firm DisplayMate Technologies. “Its like eggs in a supermarket: You can’t buy a small egg anymore. They all start at medium.”

Lawsuit Claims iPad Overheats

A Lawsuit was filed on the 23rd of July against Apple Inc. in the federal court in Oakland, California. Claiming that Apples new iPad ‘does not live up to the reasonable consumer’s expectations created by Apple’ because it ‘overheats so quickly under common weather conditions.’

The lawsuit also claims that when placed in direct sunlight the iPad ‘turns off, sometimes after just a few minutes of use. Apple has no official comment on the lawsuit that was first reported by Bloomberg on Monday.

Has anyone else eperienced these problems? Living in the UK even with the fairly hot past few months I’ve not experienced any problems with over heating while using the iPad, even out and about and in direct sunlight. Apart from not being able to see the glossy screen. Roll on anti-glare iPad options.

Apple Battery Charger gets official

Apple's just slipped something into its iMac update press release that we didn't want to go unnoticed: a battery charger.

Apple's AA battery-powered lineup now includes the wireless keyboard, the Magic Mouse (which seriously burns through the juice) and

the Magic Trackpad, and for $29 you can score a dedicated charger for all that gear.

The Apple Battery Charger comes with six long-lived NiMH rechargeable batteries which apparently have a lifetime of up to 10 years.

Update: We just had a chance to get a quick hands-on with the little guy, and well, it's a battery charger.

Apple tells us the charger has the lowest vampire power draw of any charger on the market -- the idea is for

users to keep two batteries in each of their peripherals and two in the charger, so they can quickly swap out as the cells run out.

SIM-free Sony Ericsson X10 Mini Pro available from Mobile Fun

Android have had a succession of massive hits this year, with the HTC Legend, Wildfire and particularly the Desire all being released to wide acclaim and rave reviews.

The Xperia X10 marked their move into Sony Ericsson handsets, and proved wildly successful; this was quickly followed up by the X10 Mini and now the X10 Mini Pro,

which is virtually identical but for the clever addition of a teeny slide-out qwerty keyboard. The SIM free X10 Mini Pro is available from the Mobile Fun website.

The SIM free X10 Mini and Mini Pro are more than just scaled down versions of the X10, though; really they’re a completely different phone, one which manages to pack a feast of features into a handset only a little larger than a box of matches.

The user interface is intuitive and simple, allowing you to access all of your favourite apps from the homescreen with one touch, and to customize which ones you have available. That gives you speedy access on the go to all of your email, SMS, music and social media functions.

The HP is not abandoned Slate

Palm's recent acquisition by HP has suggested the abandonment of Windows 7 on a potential shelf in favor of Palm OS. HP responds to these rumors by confirming the use of Microsoft's OS on a shelf "Slate", and specifies that the transition will be reserved for professionals. The idea is to target very precisely the use of Windows 7 here in the middle of the pros, so as not to shade to another project in the HP matter.

For the manufacturer actually going to work in parallel on a variant of the famous webOS operator, which we still know so far that very little (except that the name PalmPad was filed). Lots of things to expect from HP in the coming months so. The idea of a touch pad tapping the Palm OS is interesting enough to provoke in us a particularly advanced form of impatience ...

Moreover, we learn from the mouth of Jon Rubinstein (Palm CEO) that the 2.0 update webOS is in preparation. Maybe do we find the famous shelf, who knows.

Sprint’s Samsung Epic 4G Release Date Is August 20th

The Samsung Galaxy S Pro has been rumored for a very long time before being officially announced by Sprint as the Epic 4G. According to this little Samsung TV schedule, the Sprint Samsung Epic 4G release date is August 20th!

HTC Will Bring Sense UI to Windows Phone 7 BY Dan NosowitzToday

HTC's Sense UI, a custom-made theme that sits over another OS and provides new functionality and a high level of polish, is probably the best regarded of all manufacturer-made custom UIs.

Others, like Samsung's TouchWiz and Motorola's BLUR, are often less preferable than the untouched OS, but HTC Sense is often a major selling point on HTC phones like the HD2 (pictured), Droid Incredible, and Evo 4G.

But a new tide is coming. The OSes HTC had been improving with Sense, namely Android and Windows Mobile, may not need it quite so much.

Google is rumored to be focusing on UI improvements with the next version of Android, even hiring away one of Palm's crack UI designers to work on Android 3.0, codenamed

"Gingerbread." And Microsoft, saddled with an OS long past the point of improvement, has simply tossed out Windows Mobile in favor of the new, very slick Windows Phone 7.

Vodafone to stop 360 phones

While Microsoft recently killed its Kin phones, Vodafone decided to follow suit by stopping any more release of handsets from the 360 line. However, the 360 services suite will still continue to exist, although you won't be looking at any more 360-branded handsets down the line.

For those who look forward to the H2, you will be disappointed since it was originally supposed to be launched shortly.

This is a LiMo-powered handset, which just goes to prove that competing in the smartphone market with a new operating system might not be as easy as it sounds, so hopefully Samsung's bada OS will not suffer the same fate.
